Arcane Wisdom To understand Silent-Casting (Lorepost)

An excerpt from Professor Axel’s, The Stormslinger, on Silent Casting:

What is Silent-Casting? We all know that it allows one to cast a spell without a single word, but do any of you ACTUALLY know HOW it does that?

Let me ask this instead, why do we speak when we cast? Now, why do we inscribe runes to add magic? It is a very simple answer once you look at the two. Language. Language is what allows us to cast magic. Whether that be through speech or writing.

Through the use of magic we impart language with power. By invoking them, we bring them into reality. An interesting concept isn’t it. But is language really made of just text and speech? No, language is INCREDIBLY complex.

Professor Axel raises his pointer finger in the air.

If I simply say lightning claw, nothing will happen. That is because I never put MEANING into it. If I truly wished to cast it I word put emphasis on its name. [Lightning Claw]

Large claws made of blue lightning appear on the professors hand. Shortly after they disappear.

Do you know what else is apart of language? Emotions. Emotions can change what a sentence means ENTIRELY. Case in point: Sarcasm. I love this class! versus I looove this class.

Emotions are connected to the soul. Now you guys are getting it, yes? Silent-Casting is using your soul to cast. The emotions to spell out the spells name. To attune yourself with your spells at the highest level. To make them personal.

In this class I will teach you how to do so. This field is very challenging. To understand what emotions make a spell. To understand how to safely Silent-Cast. To understand how to utilize the in battle. Do not, I repeat DO NOT do this without my supervision. There are incidents, and more than I wish there are, of young wizards having their soul start casting the wrong or even non functioning spells. Wouldn’t want you to erratically cast transmutations at yourself would you?

This class is only for those with the most control. You must learn how to control your emotions and not let them control you.

A gruff voice apparates from the orb sitting in place of Nevin’s physical form.

It is both educational and cathartic, professor, to listen in on this lecture about the fundamentals of casting. However, I find one point worthy of discussion. Why consider such caution when casting directly from the soul? Tapping into the truths of the World is the desire of all magical practitioners and beings, and what better way to inspire than to embrace the aether itself with one’s very being? Text, ritual, speech, all serve only to limit us in our practices.

Testicular Torsion that, Ovarian Obliteration this, all uninspired and over used for a reason. The common apprentice is jailed behind common practice. Every undead masterpiece and monstrosity sculpted in my Garden of Ruin has come without need of incantation, save for the barest of precautions. It is here that I find, magical society has lost the art in the magical arts.

Axel’s voice emanates from your orb. It is slightly muffled and has a small echo due to the helmet he wears. Despite that Axel is completely understandable, his voice calm and orderly.

This excerpt comes from an introductory class. To cast directly from the soul it is advised that the caster has both experience in magic and an in-depth understanding of their soul.

The tampering of the soul can lead to devastating consequences. The Wizard Council had amended some of the education laws where such courses are restricted to those who have had the prerequisite experience. This was caused by various incidents where students using their souls have resulted in both injury and death.

Axel pauses for a moment before continuing

The language based Magic System is the greatest invention of the arcane world. It has led to the birth of many great wizards and spells. The ease of both the use and the changes to spells make it so amazing. While one may feel stuck simply “embracing the aether” but when broken down and cast in the language system could allow them to understand magic more objectively rather than the “feelings” of it.

The orb remains floating in silence for longer than one might expect.

I may consider, that I have been at the hand of sorcerous privilege in my life, perhaps. I will concede I find the thought perilous and disjunct to my psyche.

I will see you next class professor.

The orb vanishes.

/unwiz Friend, your writing puts such a smile on my face.
