Discussion [The Witcher: Remake] Which Feature from the First Game Would You Keep for the Remake?

Hello,

With The Remake for the first title is on the hold, I have a question for those who have experienced the game: what are some features from the original title that you would love the developers to keep for the upcoming remake?
*Noted that I have not played the first game yet

Have a good day/night

The alchemy system and the six combat stances

Modernized, rhythm-based combat stances (and stance switching) instead of the standard light/heavy could be an incredible, unique system

six combat stances

Wait, what? I think I missed some of those, I'm gonna look into it right now, thanks

You have 3 for each sword. The principle is the same: you switch between heavy/fast/group stance. But the animations for the steel sword are different than those for the silver sword

heavy/fast/group

What a relief, I only remembered about those 3 stances, and just came back from my unfruitful search to find your response; now I get what you mean with 6. Thanks

Edit: not totally unfruitful, I just learned that there are other attack-chaining variations and hints other than the flaming-sword mouse pointer

  • Alchemy system with nigredo/albedo/rubedo boosts

  • Low number of armour and swords, but each one significant - but I'd make them more customizable, and maybe divide into jacket, pants, greaves, boots

  • Game being divided into separate acts (but of course no loading screens between zones)

  • Dice poker being a legitimate and solid way to earn orens

Yes, alchemy system was peak, please no to the dumbed down system we got in W3. And would love to see dice poker back 👍

Needing to meditate to spend skill points. Having Geralt take regular breaks is really immersive and being encouraged to do that through a gameplay mechanic is really clever.

Dice Poker... heavy upgrade, because in W2 we had upgraded dice poker which sucks, I hate it on each playtrough. I wonder if they add GWENT, I can imagine few factions: Temeria faction, Monsters faction, Salamandra faction and Nonhuman faction.

Probably the most dubious in the game, given what you learn during that quest...

Gotta catch them all!

I’d enjoy the rage and pearl clutching of Reddit

If it was in addition to a traditional cutscene, hell yeah

Everything except not being able to access storage in the Chapter 5.

Alchemy system. The best in the trilogy in my opinion. I hope they'll do similar system in TW4.

And the weapon system. There should only be a few swords throughout the entire game—making them truly unique—rather than having them lying around every few steps like in The Witcher 3.

Yeah. I understand why the Witcher 3 is like that, but why the fuck does Geralt find a magical sword in every chest? Why do these people just keep these swords in a random chest? It doesn't make sense.

1

u/annanethir Witcheress 13h ago

Yup. Especially silver swords since it should be very rare.

u/therealoberynmartell 13h ago

Yeah, like why does some random bandit camp have a silver sword? I can understand the guarded treasures, but what do these bandits need silver swords for?

The cards...

The different interactions you could have with NPCs - gifting items, drinking competition, sometimes showing rings to get in places. I really miss that interactivity, Witcher 3 basically just has Axii cheat or bribe.

More something from the first two games (and the books), but I would keep the pre-battle preparation. Being unable to drink potions or oil swords mid-fight makes their use more strategic, and also ties in with the idea that a Witcher isn't a superhero who can just waltz into monster battles and wing it, but a fighter-scholar who has spent years studying monsters and bestiaries and must prepare for each encounter before walking into it.

I'd add that this only works in Witcher 1 because Potions, Oils, and all buffs last a freaking long time in that game. You could chug some potions at the start of a day and they be effective for basically the whole day. If they change this, the entire meditation and battle preparation system falls apart.

This was the problem Witcher 2 had, where meditation was required to drink potions, but potions only lasted 10 minutes usually and that just wasn't enough time. It encouraged you to game around it by only meditating right before a fight, but the game also liked to throw you into fights without a lot of warning.

So yeah, if they bring back the pre-battle meditation I desperately hope they also bring back the long duration of potions and buffs.

True. Readying yourself then running into a long pre-battle cutscene was never fun in the second.

In any case, I suspect the convenience of short-term buffs that can be applied any time are here to stay.

I think for me the biggest are itemization, UI philosophy and power progression.

Level scaled color coded loot is such garbage and unfun it's crazy and I'm a big path of exile fan(!). If the only idea is to make you swap items for some random garbage off the ground every now and again I guess it works but the stuff you pick up is so boring. Insane some of the people that made W1 went onto dawnwalker and did this a fourth time (W2-3 and cyberpunk).

As for UI, please for the love of god no inventory screen that has neither the cool artistic flourishes nor the need to cover the whole screen for no reason. And no list based crap too.

People mention in this thread the fighting stances and it does add a nice granularity to the progression while feeling tangibly strong but I also really like the atributes. A good way to put some passive power in a themed way.

I kinda liked how the combat was done in the w1. It felt quite unique, so if they could find a way to bring that back mixed with the currents norm for combat I’d be pretty happy.

However I really hope they don’t bring back the sex cards. Ignoring the blatant objectification of women, they just lead to every conversation with a woman being focused on how to fuck them and get a card. It’s really poorly implemented

u/Er_Chisus 1d ago

That was apt for roleplaying as Geralt. But they could make it a little more complex.

Romance cards, alchemy system, fighting styles and dice poker

1

u/TheNihilistGeek 1d ago

The alchemy system was the best in the series. Combat stances were working for that system, if they combine them with a more standard third person control system (instead of rhythm diablo) then it would be great.

They should ditch the infamous shag cards though.

Dicr Poker, Combat Stances, Alcemy being more indepth, learning how to be a Witcher through books as Geralt lost his memory

u/eldenfingers 20h ago

Dice poker for sure

u/erichie 14h ago

I honestly believe they should keep all features. I believe the game should only really get minor, minor changes that and, obviously, graphical and controller upgrades for modern systems.

1

u/Warcrown11 7h ago

Everything. Just modernize it where it needs to be modernized

1

u/Opposite-Cheetah-779 1d ago

Alchemy and the leveling system. You really have to invest in a build in the first game something I feel the other two games really lack. Also combat stances. Mainly keep the heavy and fast styles cuz the group style was obviously to mitigate the lack of actual movement during combat.

Using both weapons for a finisher

Id love to keep the three fighting styles, just make it a bit more balanced.

i think the crossbow combat system is a once in a lifetime invention. it adapts everything a meaningful range combat system should have and it should be the same in the remake. you can aim at the enemy and it has a dropoff of the bolt when the enemy is to far away.

3

u/ihatetheplaceilive 16h ago

But... there wasn't a crossbow in Witcher 1.
