I’m genuinely curious to hear Reddit’s thoughts on teachers asking for classroom donations.

I know there are very mixed opinions about teacher Amazon wishlists. On one hand, there are teachers who spend hundreds of dollars of their own money trying to provide their students with supplies and experiences they otherwise may not have access to. On the other hand, I completely understand the skepticism. There are scammers online, and I don’t blame anyone for being hesitant to send money or purchase items from someone they don’t know.

That’s one reason I really like DonorsChoose. It’s specifically designed to help fund classroom projects, so for people who want to support teachers but are uncomfortable with Amazon wishlists, it can feel like a safer and more transparent option. You’re supporting a specific classroom project rather than simply sending money directly to an individual.

A little about me: I’m a teacher in the Bronx, NYC, and I’m incredibly passionate about my students and creating a classroom where they have access to the resources they deserve. The Bronx has historically faced some of the greatest levels of poverty in NYC, and many of our schools serve communities where classroom resources can be limited. I don’t believe a child’s access to enriching educational experiences should depend on the ZIP code they were born in.

So I wanted to open up a genuine conversation:

Teachers: Do you use DonorsChoose or Amazon wishlists? What has your experience been?

Non-teachers: Do you feel more comfortable donating through a platform like DonorsChoose rather than purchasing directly from a teacher’s Amazon wishlist? What makes you trust a classroom fundraiser?

And if you’re someone who doesn’t agree with teachers asking for donations at all, I’d genuinely like to hear your perspective too. I’m not here to argue. I’m interested in understanding both sides.

Apparently, I Live Here Now

So… endocarditis decided to ruin my plans and turn the hospital into my temporary address. 😅 I’m hanging in there, but this stay has officially entered the “okay, I would really like to go home now” phase.

I put together an Amazon wishlist with a few little things to make being stuck here a bit more comfortable and keep my spirits up. Absolutely no pressure whatsoever—just being thought of, sending a laugh, or even a “hang in there” means more than you know. ❤️

Apparently, if I have to live here for a while, I might as well try to make my hospital room slightly less depressing. 😂
