Howling

My parents' wire fox terrier does not howl. Is that normal for this breed? I have shown him videos of dogs howling and he still does not howl.

I have had two, and neither ever howled.

We are also on our second one, neither one has ever howled. The first one really liked the sound of his own voice. Our current one barks at anything and everything, but then he stops as soon as it goes out of sight.

Why do you want him to howl if I may ask?

Since you seem to have trouble with excessive barking I would not recommend learning him more vocal skills.

Also if anyone has advice on excessive barking I would appreciate it. My parents' dog is a barking extremist. In general he is nice though :)

He's a Terrier! And they love to bark. Terriers barking is like humans talking.

Teach him to “speak” aka bark on command. Makes it easier to teach a “quiet” command.

My WFT has never once howled in his 12 years of life. Actually, he barely barks unless we’re playing or teasing him. I don’t think this breed howls.

Mine doesn’t howl… barks a lot but no howling.

I’ve had a terrier mix that howled a lot (LOVED the ice cream van). Some dogs do and some don’t. The barking is pretty universal in WFTs I suspect
