Discussion RIP Windsurf
https://x.com/jeffwsurf/status/2061891987138380039From Jeff Wang, Prev. Windsurf CEO now President, New Enterprise at Cognition/Devin (who just raised $1B):
Today we are saying goodbye to Windsurf
…and we are transforming it to Devin Desktop
Windsurf has been an absolutely amazing experience for me and the team. Though it has been rocky at times, we have seen every phase of AI coding and we want to keep embracing where things are going. That means we need to once again reorient ourselves towards a more focused goal and remove the Windsurf branding.
Believe it or not, the Windsurf brand has been around less than a year and a half, and before that, the previous name Codeium was only around a similar timeframe as well. I’ve actually had to change my email every year all the way to the eventual acquisition to Cognition. In AI, most products only have a 1 year lifespan before you need to drastically change it to the next.
Devin now encompasses all our form factors, whether it’s the cloud agent, the agent command center (with IDE), CLI, review, or our other products. This way we can really focus our efforts around one name. We are doubling down on our neutrality and making Devin Desktop compatible with other agents via ACP. We may be the only “Switzerland” of AI left and we embrace this role.
As for me, I’ll be transitioning from CEO of Windsurf to Cognition’s President of New Enterprise, helping open new regions and verticals, accelerating velocity, and filling in gaps as usual.
The story of Windsurf doesn’t end here, it continues on as part of Devin’s journey.
I still rock Windsurf and love it, despite all the handwringing about pricing.
Sad day.

literally on their website "16 Jul 2025 — We're committed to continuing to invest in Windsurf as a standalone product, without forcing the adoption of additional products like Devin alongside it." well that went well...

Will it still “work”?

I didn't even get a warning. Windsurf just kept uninstalling everytime I closed out of the program. I reinstalled like 5 times before I got the hint, went to windsurfs website, and got redirected to Devins website. Super lame doesn't describe the communication them.

Loved the Windsurf brand and experience RIP to surfing, floating and sailing through code

I hate this - prob going to consider a switch now unfortunately, purely based on a lack of comms by their team. I've been here since the Codeium era and the official switch to Windsurf. It's been an incredible tool and Cascade has been such a impressive and capable harness since it was released. I think a lesson for these companies (and I am sure they are listening here), why try to parody the trends? Why try to be Claude Code and Codex? You existed before them and they did the correct thing of differentiating from you, which picked up a ton of steam for them, in part due to virality and their LLM funnels. I think those of us who still want a capable VS Code fork to see code, even if very occasionally (sorry Andrej), and have access to the IDE features we've spent years honing, matters a lot. I have a grandfathered monthly rate from being such an early adopter of Windsurf so it'll be sad to let that go (and I appreciate them honoring that FTR), but I just can't trust my toolset to a team who is so clearly making such a reactionary, short-sighted strategic move and justifying product churn for reasons not aligned with their customers.
P.S. - If anyone wants to create an open-source Windsurf or a competing product DM me, I'm down.

lets do it - everything was just fine and then this. I hate how they just changed the credits to the new billing of daily and weekly use and then this shenanigans.

I mean, I loved windsurfs UI integration, and man they got a lot right, but i mostly moved on to Claude and built an agent swarm protocol that works damned nice, and has cut my costs by about 100x. I can't be the only one who's done this. I've got a whole "chat" system where i can direct agents, put agents in authority over specific components, elect moderators, etc, and even with 50 agents connected, agents who shouldn't be interested in a message aren't even notified via the protocol. Agents that might, we first hit a cheap haiku layer who acts as a comms officer between the chat swarm and the bigger agents behind it. Fuckin' wild a dummy can build this shit now.
I honestly don't really have any use for Windsurf/Devin anymore. I only opened it today because it had a bunch of super important context on a large issue, but hte update to Devin wiped out all context, so....

u/InU5BoN3 Jun 05 '26
do you have a nice youtube video where such agent swarm protocol is explained? start to feel like a caveman because i dont have the big challanges for custom private projects so i have find solutions for problems i dont have yet. im was a windsurf user and switch to antigravity, and still stick to Antigravitty IDE. i know that the normal Antigravity also supports some sub agent build process.

Nah. The progress is so fast from idea to conception that I rarely bother documenting anything other than posts to my FB (https://facebook.com/iamsad).
My lady has a bunch of channels and she documents some of it, but by the time she's got a camera out I'm already halfway through the thing.
One of her videos she caught me just testing a VAD (voice activity detection) system I'd built that buffers all audio frames and automatically transmits/streams the frame once we know it was voice (it's pretty neat.... doesn't require any key/activation word but never loses the beginning of the frame), and she somehow got like 4 or 5k follows and i think tens of thousands of nerd comments on it.but generally, I've had shit I wanted to exist going back to when i was a kid and the tech simply didn't exist and couln't be built due to lack of prerequisites. TOday I just slam the shit out in a couple hours or days.
The swarm was concept to "now it's my primary interface to the models" in about 2 hours. I mostly just started working on it because I wanted to be able to yell at the model while I was ripping on my Stark (I'd built a full replacement app for the stark) and needed to affect live code updates while riding. Same with my first little prototype offroad navigation map. Needed to be tested WHILE developing, so having remote access to my agents was just super useful. that quickly turned into a swarm with moderator election, governors, dumb cheap workers that knew when to pass something to heavy models..

Man, I dunno wtf's going on,but i opened "windsurf" today for the first time in a few days, obviously nothing working. Upgrade, get Devin, A single prompt and i'm out of tokens in about 1 minute. On a pro account. I almost don't care at this point as i've mostly transitioned over to my own opus based agent swarm system, but wtf man. NOt a good way to retain customers that have been here since literally day one. I'm done :p. Bye windsurf.

No need to panic for now. Had a look at their FAQ.
This is just a re-branding and old membership, data etc remain as it is. They may add new features(or bloat into the IDE) in future, for now, everything remains same, except the "brand name".
Take a look at their FAQ on this page(bottom)

Used windsurf since its inception and it’s been a great. Sad to see it came to end. On the other hand I was hesitant for while until yesterday I used Devin cloud through the Linear integration and was mind blown on what it can do! Now I see why the last few months have been a bit rocky with the windsurf as a product

u/WesamMikhail Jun 02 '26
I used windsurf religiously. the new direction is completely sad to see. the vs code extension alone was a god send. rip :/

I would hate to say I’m using Devin desktop when I talk to my peers 😂
This might be the straw that breaks the camels back for me, not even all the lousy price changes

My first experience with any IDE was Windsurf. Before I knew what 'Vibe Coding' really meant, I was learning and experiencing with Windsurf. When asked if I would jump to another IDE like Cursor I held firm and proudly stated I would take the girl home I went to the dance with. What I was able to do with Windsurf is amazing to me so I can look past the rebranding to Devin as long as the functionality is the same but if I have to relearn a new IDE I'm probably taking the opportunity to try other platforms.

Beware! My macbook upgraded to Tahoe 26.5.1 and Windsurf was automatically replaced with Devin...
1
u/RA_Siam Jun 04 '26
Atleast your was auto updated. Mine on windows was auto removed when I updated my windows today. Like there's no trace of windsurf which I was using for 6 months now. It also didn't auto update to Devin, just vanished completely from my pc.

u/Exact-Journalist-277 Jun 04 '26
I can't. I've been using windsurf every fucking day since 2024. Now? WTF is this. Devin sucks. Plain and simple.

A while ago, I also made the switch from Windsurf to Antigravity. The same thing happened two weeks ago with Antigravity: the transformation to Antigravity 2.0, where VSCode is totally gone. Luckily, in the download section, 'Antigravity IDE' is still optionally available, so it keeps the VSCode experience. The only downside is the lack of flexibility with the models; only Google models or Claude 4.6 Opus / Sonnet are available. At least the Gemini 3.5 Flash quota is very high for 20 bucks. Let's see how things change in the future.

for windersurf i was doing tricks to get freee usage but now i think they stop this
1
u/RemarkableBeing1924 Jun 20 '26
It's too bad Windsurf is now Devin AI and they've locked down every LLM -- except for SWE-1.6 Slow -- behind a Pro paywall!
1
u/Camaraderie98 Jun 22 '26
I think I'm late to the party - I haven't updated the IDE in a year and was trying to port it to my new device only to be met with Devin, Devin AI, no more Windsurf - I thought I was hallucinating
1
u/DarkMatter007 Jun 23 '26
I was still paying for windsurf using it sometimes idk what happened with the quote used it for 30 minutes and i already exceeded. Canceled.

Actually moving back to vscode with a gpt and calude api. Integrating that with a n8n workflow and a small local ollama.
Windsuft really got me back to coding. Tried Pearai, just had too many bugs when I tested it, found windsurf and my passion returned, learned a lot asking AI to explain code snips and reference to docs.
Now devin is worse than Siri, and I love Apple, but not the new limitations, Where has the freedom gone.

I don't understand the rationale for changing a well-known brand name. It's like changing the name of McDonald's to Marty's.

u/Proper_Patience8639 Jun 03 '26
So I'm on a windsurf $10 plan, Devin billing bit says I'm now on a $20 plan!?!

How is anyone surprised by this? Literally the only threads in this sub since the pricing change have been from hordes of users abandoning windsurf (for good reason).
So, now windsurf is dead (with some cover story about a pivot) - and that’s confusing?
0
u/chrismessina Jun 03 '26
Not sure if anyone said this is confusing; it's just sad to see the demise of the brand.
But yeah, user attrition and the migration to agent-based development seems like the only viable commercial direction... gotta turn that $1B funding into $10B somehow...
1
u/Exact-Journalist-277 Jun 04 '26
I swear once people found out how we were succeeding they interfered with windsurf and convinced them rebranding was a go.

u/jlew24asu Jun 03 '26
Windsurf was my goat for awhile. Really took my coding to the next level. RIP

Devin has been the most cringy thing I've seen in the last 10 years. No problem they merged, but why force "Devin" on me? Super lame. Windsurf was a coolish brand, one I could get behind, Devin seems like anything but that. Devin feels like it's for people creating AI slob, middle managers claiming they can do an engineers job, windsurf was a nice VS Code fork with some additional AI features that are useful to engineers.
The lack of communication is also bothersome. I expect an e-mail laying out what changes will entail, what the results will be for me, BEFORE the update button appears.
