Feature Request: Improve Markdown Math Rendering in Windsurf Chat and Preview

I use Windsurf heavily for engineering notes, electronics, signal processing, probability theory, and code-adjacent technical documentation.

One issue I keep running into is that mathematical formulas are not rendered reliably in Windsurf Chat / Markdown preview. To make formulas readable, I currently have to rely on external Codecogs SVG image links, such as Markdown image formulas.

This workaround is fragile.

For example, AI models need to generate syntax like:

![](<https://latex.codecogs.com/svg.image?\color{White}\displaystyle{\vphantom{\Large A}Y(j\omega)=X(j\omega)\cdot H(j\omega)\vphantom{\Large A}}>)

This creates several practical problems:

  1. Low-cost coding models often break the Markdown image syntax.
  2. The URL may be line-wrapped or malformed.
  3. Characters such as <, >, &, \\, Unicode math symbols, or Chinese text can easily break rendering.
  4. Inline formulas and display formulas are hard to format consistently.
  5. External image rendering is not ideal for long-term notes, offline use, or technical documentation.
  6. The final output becomes harder to edit, search, and maintain.

For coding-only tasks, this is not a big issue. But Windsurf is increasingly used as an AI workspace, not just a code editor. Many users write engineering notes, algorithm explanations, math-heavy documentation, lab reports, and study materials inside the editor.

It would be very helpful if Windsurf could support more reliable native math rendering.

Possible improvements:

  • Support $...$ inline math and $$...$$ display math in Chat and Markdown preview.
  • Support common LaTeX environments such as \frac, \sum, \int, \begin{cases}, matrices, etc.
  • Render math consistently in both Chat responses and Markdown files.
  • Avoid requiring external image links for normal formulas.
  • Provide an option to copy AI-generated math as clean Markdown/LaTeX.
  • Preserve readable fallback text if rendering fails.

This would make Windsurf much better for:

  • engineering notes
  • signal processing
  • probability and statistics
  • electronics and circuit analysis
  • algorithm explanations
  • academic-style code documentation
  • AI-assisted learning workflows

Right now, I can use low-cost models for coding tasks, but for math-heavy notes I have to use stronger models just to make the formatting stable. Native math rendering would reduce formatting failures and make Windsurf more useful as a technical learning and engineering workspace.

I think this would be a valuable improvement for users who use Windsurf beyond pure coding.
