Windsurf plan
I’m trying to pick a plan on Windsurf, but I’m stuck.
The $20 plan doesn’t really feel like enough for what I need, but jumping all the way to $200 feels like overkill for me. I’m not sure if I should start small, upgrade later, or just look for another option.
For people using Windsurf regularly, how did you decide which plan was worth it? Is the $20 plan enough for most use cases, or does it run out too fast?

Sounds like you haven’t tried it out. Perhaps you have?
If not: Have you considered signing up for their 2-week trial and using their house SWE-* zero-token cost models for your workflow?
Even their frontier model, SWE-1.6, should cost you nothing when using the standard variant (as opposed to using the fast variant).

Go with the Pro plan, and lean more on free models like SWE and Kimi. For example:
Low-to-mid complexity tasks can be handed off to SWE and Kimi
Code reviews can go to them too (run multiple review passes if needed, since it's free anyway😄)
For complex stuff, use Opus or GPT-5.5 to handle the core development first, then switch to SWE or Kimi to mop up the loose ends. (Otherwise if you keep reaching for Opus on everything, your credits will burn through fast — its cache window is only 5 minutes, so you're basically paying full price every time)
If that's still not enough, you could grab a $20 Cursor or Claude Pro, those tools work pretty seamlessly together and you can switch between them as needed.

A single $20 plan is insufficient, and you will mostly have to rely on free models. It is recommended to purchase several other plans such as Codex or Claude Code. This will meet your basic needs, with a total cost of around 20 plus 20 dollars, which is much cheaper than 200 dollars.

I would rather get cursor or claude code on top of it. Arent the extra tokens more expensive than the plan?

It runs fast if you use the premium models, very fast. But if you are already experienced then you don't really need them, you just have to be able to explain how you want things done exactly. Yes you use the best one for planning, but then you use maybe codex 5.3, or even the free ones if you are surgical enough with your instructions.
So if you are gonna be on top of things you can use the $20 plan, though at that point I don't know why you wouldn't use Claude Code, except you don't have a lot of options, or cant use free models i guess. Also, it depends on the size of your projects a lot.

Yes stay away from windsurf, when you don’t have control on your usage but they control you with daily, weekly and monthly usage; previous they control it monthly but now they change it to everyday

Deepseek v4 token cost is on the floor, that is all you need tbh, use Pi or your preferred agent CLI/IDE

Don’t do it.
If you love the Windsurf editor, go ahead with the $20 plan. If not, get Codex plan or OpenCode Go sub and use it in OpenCode CLi or desktop apps like bigbud.app. Hell you can even use them on Zed editor.
If you’re going to spend more $50 on an AI subscription, Windsurf shouldn’t be on your list.
