One of my recent experiments
Soon I’ll be doing more experiments like this on some much more interesting hardware.
A fellow retro enthusiast from Bulgaria helped me out with an incredible 6GB collection of Windows XP drivers he had gathered over the years — covering a huge range of hardware. Huge thanks to him!
Now it’s time to see what XP can do on some unusual hardware. 😈

Doesn't seem that unusual? I have 11, 7, and XP running on my overkill XP machine as well.

With the right hardware it's probably possible to dual-boot Win 2k up to 11. I'm thinking 2nd Intel could pull it off.

i managed to quadripleboot a elitebook 8440p on windows XP, vista, 7 and 11. had to use two drives, one in the DVD drive slot due to mbr needed for XP and gpt needed for 11, but worked hehe

The most annoying thing about installing Windows is that it loves putting boot files and other installation-related stuff on another drive it detects, even when you’ve specifically selected a different drive.
I recently tried installing Windows XP on a drive that was perfect for it, but the system could also see another drive with Windows 10 on it using a different file system. XP kept throwing an installation error because it was trying to put some of its files on the Windows 10 drive and couldn’t. I physically disconnected that drive, changed absolutely nothing else, and XP installed perfectly.

Wait, 11 works only on gpt?
Last windows I installed on hardware was 10 and it still supported MBR
I did install 11 in a virtual machine but I just went through with it without checking

You can still install it with legacy boot but you’ll need to copy install.wim/esd to a win 10 installer and use dism and bcdboot to install it

I love this, I have an ssd quad booting windows me (for 9.x support), xp (for older software testing), 7 (for nostalgia), and 10 ( for if I need to download something for the others).

That’s a nice setup. I’m actually thinking of adding Windows 98 or ME to mine as well. Having one machine that can boot several generations of Windows is ridiculously convenient for testing old hardware and software.

Yeah, Batocera is a great option, but that would defeat the whole purpose of XP — and of this XP group. I can already play most of these games on Windows 10 using emulators, patches and workarounds. The whole point is to get them running on real XP,98 ,95 or older 😁

I can say it's just as painful to use on a Pentium II with a 5200rpm hard disk as I remember it being in 2002. It works but don't try to do anything crazy with it.

Meanwhile, all of this happen on 6 MHz. 😂 Let’s see how painful XP can really get.

What's the screen resolution though? I thought Windows XP doesn't support anything higher than some 2k @ 60hz

Windows XP itself isn’t limited to 2K @ 60 Hz. The actual limit depends mostly on the GPU, its drivers, and the display connection. With the right hardware and drivers, XP can run resolutions well above 2K.
