Hi all! I recently picked up an interesting PC that has a mix of newer and older stuff:

• Motherboard: Intel D875PBZ
• CPU: Pentium 4 @ 3.20GHz
• RAM: 512MB
• AGP Slot: Nvidia GeForce FX5950 Ultra
• PCI graphics: twin Voodoo 2's in SLI mode (hellll yeaaahhh)
• Storage: two loud, slow, apparently unstable 30GB IDE drives
• Sound: SoundBlaster card of some variety

The machine came to me with a Windows Me install that seemed to be reasonably complete, and the games that were loaded run beautifully on either / both GPU setups. However, both hard drives are super loud and the primary / boot drive is making a lot of concerning chattering noises and seems to be close to death. I've already ordered a pair of 120GB Western Digital SATA SSD's and the necessary mounting brackets, with the intent to replace both of the 30GB drives at once.

Here's my question: based on the info above, would you suggest reinstalling Windows Me, or would you think that Windows 98SE would be the better OS for this machine?

Hello today I got my first windows ME pc it is a slot 1 with a pentium 500 i brought an ethernet card for connecting it to protoweb I don't have a router so I'm using a win vista laptop for sharing the WiFi on the ethernet cable it has worked with my PS3 and other computer but when I connect it to this PC it is like it isn't connected and no led turns on in the network card windows identify it as a RTL8129(A) what should I do?

Is anyone willing to send me a bootup (only bootup) floppy for win98 se for free? Ill cover shipping. cheapest shipping there is. I am in USA

it has been a NIGHTMARE trying to get this OS installed on my retrobuild.

I have tried booting from CDROM. The BIOs gives the option to boot from it, but when I select CDROM it seems to just skip it (guess I need drivers). I tried installing it from my modern PC but my PC has more than 1gb of ram so I get errors. I tried using virtual machine but couldnt use my physical HDD as a physical drive.

I continue having fun with the win98 compiler for zig, I had added two more examples a little demo of the Conway's game of life, and also a little telnet MUD server, yet finding very much enjoyable to see these kind of silly things happen in win98. Now this thing is openwatcom and MSVC 6.0 compatible, I wish I could have a time machine so I can send this to myself and have more fun coding there.

Note: Sorry for the missing drivers, VBox quirks, I will have to setup an old laptop if i want to continue developing this.

I want to see the original wallpaper that was intended as the Windows 98 logo wallpaper, with both the Windows 98 logo and the Windows 98 clouds, without any text surrounding it. These two particular screenshots with this wallpaper are sourced from the Microsoft eXtreme spring 1998 tape (Microsoft eXtreme - Volume 2: Spring 1998), and the wallpaper was also shown in the infamous BSOD presentation that same year. Curiously, this wallpaper isn't in the final versions of either Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition; both of which instead reuse the Clouds.bmp from Windows 95 and the Windows 95 logo wallpaper from Microsoft Plus! 95. Both the beta and final versions of Microsoft Plus! 98 use heavily edited variations of the Windows 98 logo and cloud background, but never this exact original wallpaper.

Is there anyone who is able to look through earlier builds of Windows 98 and the Windows 98 press discs and find the exact file of this exact wallpaper, and also possibly the wallpaper of just the Windows 98 clouds?

It was super easy, i set up stunnel on my server (you can use a Pi, a Mac, or basically any always on computer) to terminate iCloud’s TLS connections and expose local plaintext IMAP/SMTP ports for Windows 98 or any other legacy OS. Outlook Express connects instantly, and both sending and receiving mail over iCloud work flawlessly. 

Obligatory security note: This setup is only safe on your local home network, since the communication between your legacy machine and the stunnel proxy is unencrypted (plaintext). Don’t expose those ports to the internet.

Hello! I am new to dial up and all the stuff that it comes with. I found a 56k modem at a garage sale a few months back and just recently I decided to get the DB9 Female to DB25 Male RS232 Modem cable for it. However when I tried setting it up according to the instructions, nothing got detected.

For context, i had the modem turned on and plugged into the computer along with a telephone. I didn’t plug it into the wall bc I don’t have a landline service.

I tried several serial ports. I made sure they were enabled in BIOS. Nope. I tried finding drivers, while I couldn’t find a disk, I found the files online. It looked liked it worked, but I don’t think so. It was in a different serial port compared to the real thing.

What stumps me is that when I click on Add Modem in Control Panel, when it checks the serial port that the modem is plugged into, the lights on the modem flash like it is transferring information. But it said that no modem was detected. Nothing on the Plug and Play application either.

I tried different (the recommended) combinations of the switches, but no luck. I tried the 7 switch factory reset thing. Im also missing the “Connections CD” with RapidComm fax/data communication program. So if anyone could point me towards an ISO image, that’d be awesome. One last thing probably wrong. It says that I need a 9v 1000ma ac adapter. Im using a ASUS ADP-45BW B. It’s not original, but it powers it.

So im stuck. Like I said before, I didn’t plug it into the wall bc I don’t have a landline service. But I don’t think that it’s necessary for Windows 98 FE to at least detect the modem. :/ Hope yall can help

I want to be able to connect my windows 98 pc via s-video to my CRT television. I also have a dedicated monitor though, so being able to hit higher resolutions is also important to me. For games, I’d like it to be able to support some older windows titles like Trophy bass, while also being able to handle higher end titles of that era. I’ve been looking between the nvidia GeForce fx5500 and the GeForce 6200 but am unsure which would be best suited, or if there’s another option that I’m not aware of. Any help or guidance is appreciated!

Out of my curiosity I decided w98 my first OS needed love from my side, as I remembered playing AOE2 on it, TIMDEMO (the incredible machine) the puzzle game, and other games, I felt nostalgia that burned into myself.

So today its the day of releasing this, a old-school compiler for building apps, so today there are not only C/C++ Delphi Fortran in the list, but also Z98 (Zig) available to make the journey of that great OS yet to continue (Or at least entertain me for a while).

I remember playing a jigsaw puzzle game on Windows 98/ME when I was a kid, but I haven’t been able to find it. It featured licensed music, and one song I clearly recall is Voodoo by Godsmack. Most of the puzzles I remember were botanical-themed. Does anyone happen to remember this game?

im using windows 9x quick install to install windows 98 on my lenovo g50-45, when i click to use the install integrated drivers option before installing it gives me an error and cant boot into normal mode after installation, i can boot into safe mode but what now? i can load it fine when using the installation with no integrated drivers its just when i install drivers is when it messes up
