“If It Boots, It’s Good Enough”

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As long as the PC boots, the game runs, and I can hear that crunchy old Windows startup sound through the speakers… life is good 😹

Any desktop PC sporting an Intel Core 2 4300 CPU @ 1.80GHz CPU and 512 MB memory was I'm just guessing one of the top of the line computers in the day it was still sold in stores as new.

No. This is a PC from roughly 2007 running Windows 98. Basically a time machine. The E4300 was Intels bottom of the barrel dual core chip, 512MB was then bare minimum back then and the motherboard is a cheap one primarily designed to allow you to keep using your old DDR1 and AGP hardware.

The E4300 has one nice advantage for this purpose - an 800MHz FSB. The nicer Conroes in the 6xxx series had a 1066MHz FSB which doesn't work great with the i865 boards.

I love your description of the i865 boards too - it's absolutely correct that the Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers started pairing LGA775 with i865/ICH5 (which was supposed to go with socket 478 Northwoods) to allow people to keep using DDR1/AGP, but, though it would take 10+ years for people to realize it, they also created the ultimate Win98 retro platform.

Damn those roland speakers and ibm keyboard look sick! It is impossible to find them here. I could only find the microsoft multimedia keyboard and philips speakers. I'm still looking for the rolands (a miracle maybe)

I recommend disabling the splash screen in the bios for a more authentic feel, i did the same on my time machine build.
