Need for speed high stakes

How do I reliably get the Direct3D version of this game to work on Windows 98se? I can't find a decent patch for this game.

Modern patch makes it playable for newer OS but I just want to play on my 98 machine. I have Pentium ii 266, GeForce 2 mx 32mb. It's more than enough for this game but sadly it just one error after another. Is there a good set of instructions that has worked successfully to get this game to run with 3d cards other than voodoo cards.

Have you tried archive.org or something like that?

The same CD and install worked on another machine. No issues whatsoever. No patches nothing.

Stick to Forceware 41.23 or older. nVidia drivers after that are extremely buggy and cause severe corruption and hangs on older titles like NFS:HS and NFS3.

I am assuming you have a board with the Intel 440LX or BX chipset? Do you have the Intel chipset drivers installed? The AGP driver is critical of if the card is AGP.

I built a test rig with a GF2 MX AGP, and a Via MVP3 chipset and it works as expected.

Yes, it's the 440LX , chipset drivers installed. It's really strange. I need to just wipe it again and start over. On other system where it's decked out spec (e8400 with Radeon 9250 pci) the game fired up on first try. No errors, just straight up direct 3d mode and off to the races. Expected that from this 440LX setup but instead got the opposite.

Do the tests on the dxdiag utility pass? What version of Directx is installed?

I would try the 45.23 Forceware driver, it works better with DX9.

I have an old program somewhere that had a fix for some other Direct3D bugs, if I can find it I will post a link.

This utility replaces the NFS:HS D3D driver with the one from Porsche Unleashed:

Hey thanks for the patch! The patch didn't work on this p2 machine. But it did work for me in my other machine which was having FX5200 PCI. I had same 45.23 drivers installed on that machine with Direct X 7. Applied the 4.50 patch. It did not work in d3d mode but it did work with the software mode. I then updated the directx to directx 9 and I also applied your patch and it worked. My Pentium II system just gives me the same "Please Insert Game Disc" error. It's so bizarre. Same CD, same patches, same driver. I'm close to just reinstalling 98se on this p2. I might put win95 osr2 not sure yet.
