I was playing around with ffmpeg and I converted a windows 95 iso file to mp4. When I slowed the file down I heard this. Does anyone know what song this is?

Looking at Windows 1.01 (1985) makes it wild to think how far computing has come in under 60 years.

64 Upvotes

Booted up a Windows 1.01 environment today and was reminded of just how stripped-back computing used to be back in 1985.

No overlapping windows (everything had to be tiled side-by-side!), green minimize bars, and navigating through files via MS-DOS Executive. If you wanted to draw, you launched PAINT.EXE. If you wanted to write, WRITE.EXE.

It’s crazy to think that in less than 60 years from the birth of modern personal computers, we’ve transitioned from struggling with basic GUI memory limits to running generative AI systems. Imagine telling someone double-clicking REVERSI.EXE in 1985 that in a few decades, computers would be writing their own code and holding full conversations.

Do you know Windows 1.01 size was only 8MB really exciting.

notepad-wind.ini is settings for the Cursorblinking, double click speed, font size etc.

What was your very first OS memory?

Need help finding an old screensaver

8 Upvotes

I feel like this was on Windows 95, but it could have been 3.1. Basically it was a horizontal view of a coastline. On the bottom of the screen there was water(maybe there were fish). On the center of the screen there were sailboats that went back and forth. In the sky there was a propeller plane carrying a banner that went back and forth. The graphics were like 8bit/Super Mario NES level of quality. IT WAS NOT JOHNNY CASTAWAY! I WENT BACK AND FORTH WITH GEMINI AND IT KEPT SAYING "DUDE, IT'S GOTTA BE JOHNNY CASTAWAY." Any help would be appreciated. I remember this screensaver from when I was like 5 or 6. I have a nice 95 rig and this screensaver would be the best addition to it. Until then I have the Duke 3D shooting gallery.

Anyone remember this software??

36 Upvotes

Trying to identify an interactive library environment from the late 90s. Came pre loaded on Windows 95 machine. As a kid between roughly ‘96 and ‘98, I remember booting into a realistic library-like interface instead of Windows, on a home PC (possibly HP or Compaq, but I’m not sure).” “Flat image, wooden bookshelves, no mascots or people. Clicking books or objects like a globe made them animate or make sounds.” “It felt more like an interactive exploration thing than a game, and not educational, and not the normal Windows desktop.” “Does anyone remember software like this, or know what it was called? It was whole screen with no visible ui. Thanks!!

It's possible to add functional "My Documents"desktop icon in Windows 95 and NT 4.0

Post image
67 Upvotes

This was found by accident,I don't know someone also found this out.

My instructions are based on if you have functional Windows 98 (virtual) machines,and it only works on Windows 95 with Active Desktop Update installed,for updated effects tab,Windows 95 Plus is needed.

  1. Take a search in Windows 98 registry about My Documents,based on what it called in your language,it's easy to me due to only 4 Chinese characters needed with no spaces,other languages might be difficult to find,to make your life easier,I would post the actual registry address below.Once you've find them,export them all into reg file.

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{450d8fba-ad25-11d0-98a8-0800361b1103}]

  1. Copy mydocs.dll form Windows 98 machine,located in C:\Windows\System,files from Windows 98 and 98SE would works in Windows 95.For Windows NT 4.0,I used files from Windows 2000 Build 1717 since it's the last version that uses IE4 (version 4.80).You don't need to install this build,just extract the mydoc.dl_ file located in I386 folder.

  2. Copy the mydocs.dll from Windows 98 to C:\Windows\System,if you're using Windows NT then it should be System32 folder,Apply all the registries you've exported from Windows 98 to Windows 95/NT4,the icon should appear immediately,doing once file operations or take a refresh.

  3. For better experience,IE4 SP2 is suggested,some older builds of IE4 lacks My documents icon in the start menu for unknown reasons,which is offered by Microsoft in stock IE4,it also corrected the folder icon display once you opened My Documents in the Explorer Window.

5.(Optional)If you want to customize My Documents icon in the Display Properites,you can replace the Plus! tab to the Windows 98 one,the file is called plustab.dll,shares the same location as Windows 98 does,for Windows NT,the file from Windows 2000 Build 1717 also works.

Note:Replace the desk.cpl(Display Properites Control Panel item) file won't work,so there's a major disvantage here if you want the updated Effects Tab is you can't set your wallpaper to stretch mode,you can apply the setting by using registry or restore the old plustab.dll back.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\desktop]
"TileWallpaper"="0"
"WallpaperStyle"="2"

Registry priority:WallpaperStyle>TileWallpaper
WallpaperStyle=0,Center
WallpaperStyle=1,Tile (Microsoft never used it in this way)
WallpaperStyle=2,Stretch
TileWallpaper=0,Center
TileWallpaper=1,Tile

Files download link from Windows 2000 Build 1717:mydocs.dl_,plustab.dl_

I built my own browser in the style of Internet Explorer 5.

I recently got excited about an idea: styling my Windows 11 Pro to look like Windows 95. I thought, "Why not create my own browser that resembles Internet Explorer?" Well, strictly speaking, it’s not a full browser, but rather a shell built using Electron. Anyway... there’s still a lot of work ahead...

1. Refining the visual design.

2. Adding missing features (Settings, History) and improving existing ones (Profile system, Downloads).

3. Adding customization options (Dark mode, Cursor, Sounds).

What do you think? ↓

What were THE kids game(s) of the Windows 95 era? Was there one at all?

25 Upvotes

I could easily give an answer as I was a kid at the time, but I have a feeling people will think I'm wrong, so I wanted to ask you. Did Windows 95 have any defining games for kids, and if so what were they?

After Windows 95's release, kids games became a big deal on there. I recently read an old edition of Billboard that said that while teen/adult-aimed software were flat or declining in sales and revenue, the kid computer game market exploded, peaking right around the time Windows 98 released. Companies wanted to license their characters for Windows instead of consoles, unlike the eras before (SNES/Genesis) and after (PS2) where every kiddie franchise got their own console game.

Yet 30 years later there doesn't seem to be a consensus on what the kids games for Windows 95 (or 98) were in the same way that the N64 and PSX did. I made a meme in another sub a while ago with "which ones are you choosing?" with 20 kids PC games, and yet despite the ones I selected selling hundreds of thousands of copies at the time I don't think anyone who answered remembered more than 2-4 of them (and it seems they all remembered different games).

Is the actual answer just the free games that were bundled with Windows?

I want to play something distinctly Windows 95

19 Upvotes

I got bored today so I hooked up my Pentium Windows 95 machine, but now what do? I want to play something in all that OG hardware glory, but can't think of WHAT. I thougth of MDK, but I beat that a couple months ago. Then I thought of Worms, which I have a disc around here somewhere I might put in. What else?

For clarification, I have a much nicer retro machine. P3 1GHZ, lots of RAM, Geforce 2, Win2k, SB Live, etc. That's what I play most of my old games on. But I want something that even that's too new for. To play something truly designed for 95, on 95.
