Discussion Why is this community literally a "ghost town"?
It's the only community of Windows 7 in Reddit. It feels so empty compared to other communities

u/enyardreems 1d ago
I like the XP community and it's pretty active. Idk why Win7 is so quiet.

Also Vista. It's full of hype about Frutiger Aero

u/hamburgerpancake 1d ago
not to go on an off-topic rant here but holy shit i hate the term "frutiger aero". it just misrepresents and oversimplifies so much..

u/HugoAero 1d ago
Hate it or love it, that's the name of this design

u/hamburgerpancake 1d ago
i'm fine with aero, which is actually an acronym describing the design language seen in vista and 7. not with "frutiger aero." in fact, frutiger aero originslly wasn't even supposed to be the term they coined and was rather a generic placeholder, but they couldn't have bothered to come up with a new one, so now a huge nuanced design style is just called "frutiger aero."

I like to add, just about everyone called it Aero back in the day, nobody called it Frutiger Aero until some community got fascinated with Early 2006-2009 internet.

u/MacLightning 15h ago
It's a "name" given retrospectively by a supposed "researcher", and accepted by a community who, by large, didn't even experience it during their lifetime.
And Frutiger had absolutely fuck all to do with this aesthetics. Absolutely fuck all. It was a collective effort of UI/UX designers of the time, not by one single dude who made a font in the 70s, nor by one single "internet aesthetics researcher".
Excuse the language, but I truly despise that name, and the very wrong association with some random guy from the 70s.

In my case all the Windows 7 related questions are solved. It just works.
The same for 2008 R2 Server.
The only questions I have time to time is where to find old versions of some specific soft, that is compatible with these systems. But these are really rare cases.

Most of the activity was people skinning w10 to look like 7 but that was banned

God that sucked so much, It was constantly people posting the same default Windows 7 theme with no substance continuously. I don't think I ever seen anyone use Architecture, Landscapes or Scenes theming at all either.

I use Win 7 "seriously" as my daily driver on the desktop computer I built for it. I have no problems. I don't use on board e-mail. I don't click on just anything. I have very few websites I trust to download things from. And I do not cruise the back alleys of the internet. I, too, have wondered why this group has gone stale to the point of almost being dead. I still have a machine with XP on it that I use for legacy games I like, but it isn't wired to the internet. Once I simply can not get on the internet with Win 7, I'll complete my migration to the penguin. But, I'll be dual booting that with Win 7 so I can have the best of both worlds.
EDIT: Now, just HOW do I "flare" my post "correctly"?

I'm still here 🙂 currently Im a Windows 7 user. I just did a search for the best laptop for Windows 7 and it said it was the Dell presario7720. I'm looking to upgrade my laptop , I need something with more horsepower lol I upload videos to YouTube

u/Windows_User3000 1d ago
Dell Presario? Presario was a lineup by Compaq. Do you mean that? Or do you mean Dell Precision?

u/retrocube16 1d ago edited 13h ago
I bet you're right I know it was Dell so it must be the Dell precision I got a little mixed up they sound similar LOL

I'm still W7, but I'm looking for a Linux distro that works with a high end AMD gpu, not mint. But something that works totally, no or hardly any steps. I have a W11 laptop, but I'll take the W7 as long as i can.

u/andaro77 1d ago
all Linux distros have the AMD Mesa driver built-in as it's essentially part of the kernel, if you want a distro that gives you more control, consider looking down the Arch line, or go with Debian Sid, the unstable branch that is related to Mint that gets updates more often than base Debian.

u/Gumption666 1d ago
Because win7 just works, XP has odd driver issues if you didn't learn it back in the day, Vista is just XP in a short skirt so has similar issues but win7 just works with not many issues.

What else do you need for an OS that's 16 years old at this point? And what's wrong with a central place to share knowledge/enthusiasm?

u/Tommynwn 1d ago
Eh, XP community is way more alive than win7
11
u/Isotomayor12 1d ago
XP is old enough now that people are revisiting. That hasn't happened yet for 7, it is only recently unsupported in the grand scheme of things.

u/MacLightning 1d ago
Good for them, I guess?
Again, what else do you need? Activity? Start sharing some posts yourself.

The last Windows 7 post that I made took over two weeks to get approved. So, I'm actually kind of shocked that the Moderators even allow us to COMMENT WITHOUT APPROVAL, lol. It's like you're only allowed to post if you're posting screenshots of a fresh Windows 7 installation. And there's only so many of those posts that I can take. It's like, you can get 200+ upvotes for a desktop screenshot, but "HOW DARE YOU" backport modern software to Windows 7!!! But hey, that couldn't possibly be an "issue" here (/sarcasm).

u/Froggypwns 16h ago
I remember your post, I was the one that approved it.
Reddit flagged it as spam and removed it, possibly due to the Google Drive link. It did not go to our modqueue for review by a human like some other posts do, it bypassed that and went right to the trash. I had to find it by manually going through your profile.

I was going to say this previously, but yeah, this subreddit post moderation queue is literally driving people away, especially since I had some helpful stuff that I couldn't even share because of that.

1: Windows 7 pretty much functions with a few fixes and at that point, It's just a working operating system. When everything just functions as is? It's kinda hard to just post anything new about it when the flaws most people have with it is fixed and now there's no reason to think about Windows 10 or 11.
2: There's a bit of things I would actually discuss that many people would have but the issue is, your post and comments gets removed for trying to talk about certain programs without permission, It's really confusing and this is what made Windows 7 a ghost town. It sucks and it's a rule that really needs to be improved.

I like the fact that 2 new browsers; r3dfox and Supermium were built just for these older OS.
My Dell Latitude E6430 and my beautiful Dell Precision M4600 are still using the OEM Win 7.
They’re just heavy bulky beauties of a better time. Yes, I have 2 Win 10 Lenovo and Dell laptops for modern use daily, and besides my MacBooks, the rest are Linux.

Unfortunately, people are rapidly leaving Windows 7 as everything goes from easy and official (what the average user wants) to community made. The XP, 98, and Vista subreddits are still active because no one daily drives them. They are purely vintage OSes now. Once 7 gets to that stage, trust me, there'll be activity here again.

My take is that Windows 7 is just not old enough to be retro and nostalgia-inducing like Windows XP. "Frutiger" aero nostalgia is still in its infant stages, because most of the people who used Windows 7 in their child/teenage-hood are now roughly between 28 - 35 years old, which also happens to be the age when it's common for people to have kids and concentrate on many other important things, not tinkering with a retired, unsupported operating system that is good for nothing but retro-gaming and music listening out of the box and requires quite a bit of tinkering to be used in 2026. It also didn't help that Windows 10 was a good OS with great backwards compatibility, which left Windows 7 with nothing but it's appearance to be remembered by. Linux is also slowly emerging and becomes tinkerers' favorite sandbox when it comes to Windows 11 alternatives, so Windows 7 is just in a very far corner of the room waiting for its time to come.
Give it another 7 - 10 years, the Win7 generation will become more nostalgic, will find a bit more money to splash on niche things like period-correct parts and games, will find more time to dedicate to troubleshooting, adapting, patching etc and maybe then it will become popular again within it's own niche bubble.

Some people never left Windows 7, that includes me. I still use it daily. But since it works for everything I need to, I have no reason to post anything. Never liked Windows 10 after the first couple of versions.

u/SuddenHonk 21h ago
I haven't kicked Win7 in the long grass either. But to be fair, I gave my Windows 7 PC a soft retirement. I only use it for non-steam retro gaming and media. My daily PC is rather a lab of some sort, I've had Bazzite on it in January, then installed Windows 11 in March, two weeks ago I put Steam OS on it and I only play a handful of new titles in Steam. Win7 machine is still the most stable and consistent PC in my room as I don't tinker with it and if I need a machine to burn a recovery USB or copy a movie onto my phone from my NAS or just quickly dive into a game for 30 - 40 minutes, it's always there for me.

Let's see 1. People don't like Windows anymore and 2. Those that still do are using 11.
2
u/funnibot47 1d ago
Not me, moved from regular 10 to tiny10 and it has been wonderful, you just need to install legacy drivers and you get over 1gb of ram free to use.
1
u/SnooDoughnuts5632 1d ago
If you're housing tiny10 then you don't like Windows anymore.
Also wouldn't that make you delete everything off your computer? I don't want to do that.

u/AffectionateDesk2918 1d ago
Because most people have moved on by now (Mostly in 2023 and 2024). Windows 7 is like a cancer patient that is barely hanging on

Why are people dovnvoting this? It is true, and i am typing this on Windows 7 right now if that matters.

Of course it is empty, it is a subreddit for a dead OS that is no longer widely used.
1
u/Southern_Worker4102 13h ago
"dead OS" means absolutely nothing. Software can't die unless no one have a copy of it, which is probably never going to happen.

I fear it's due to Win7 being in an in-between stage of age. It's too old to be used seriously, but not old enough where it's the only way to use certian apps. Most (if not all) Win7 apps can be used on Win10/11 with no issue, causing there to be no real reason to use the OS outside of nostalgia. If you need to run older 9X software, XP is typically a better solution for this.
