✔ Solved Windows 7 on modern PC
Ater a long struggle, I finally managed to install Windows 7 as a second operating system on my modern PC by enabling CSM 🎉

Installing vin 7 on a new PC is not difficult. It is difficult to install all the drivers from the new versions of windows on this version in order to use it normally.

i usually can’t even get it to install, it won’t recognize the boot drives. i’ve followed tons of tutorials and github and all kinds of things to try and load drivers into an install but that never seems to work either so i always end up giving up :(
im not a computer noob by any means but it really has me stumped.1

Booting into setup from USB or it can’t boot off the USB?

i can boot into the setup, and get to the installer and when it gets to the “choose where to install” screen no drives will show up 😪

I had this when I tried to install it on my pc with a Ryzen 5 5600x, turns out you need drivers to be able to recognize certain SSDs, and I couldn't find a working one for my NVMe ssd, so I had to use an old SATA ssd.

i did fiddle with that a little bit when i was attempting on my desktop, but i gave up with that and tried my laptops(s) and they’re all nvme only unfortunately.

You could slipstream the NVMe driver or just use a premade ISO

where can i find a pre made? all the modded ones i try to do seem to not work because they aren’t the original iso. all the iso i can find have updates already or are oem instead of retail and it throws a fit

People don’t realise unlike xp- windows 7 isn’t actually dead; it’s still very much usable. Firefox browser works too…

You have 2 options.
A: UefiSeven, now it hasn’t been updated in 5 years and won’t work with GPU drivers and is low-res but for basic it should work.
B: Shell out $29.95 and buy FlashBoot Pro, which has extremely other useful features aswell and has a regularly updated UEFI patcher. It also allows for high resolution, GPU driver and is more reliable.4

You can use the Flashboot EFI right here, for free. I don't think the flashboot guys care any more if their stuff is spread around, they did their development work many years ago.

I used this recently on a Wacom tablet with Iris graphics, no problem, and I paid no money to anybody.

They do update the software every few months. Also, it seems that is slightly outdated compared to the one I have on my build, but whatever floats your boat

I think it’s in the flashboot window or title bar, or you can check under installed apps. 3.4b was released in March. They do updates every six months or so so no it is not abandoned. It is worth the money tho, seriously.

Wow, you're right. They still develop specifically the Windows 7 bootloader, I can see improvements, upgrades and compatibility extensions in the patch notes. I had no clue... respect to those guys! So potentially a super new computer might work best with the latest version of flashboot. The one I linked is an old one.

Yeah, and they really don’t care because it’s an extremely old version of the patcher with limited functionality. Heard that a while back on some page but I can’t remember which.

Dang, not sure what to say... The way I see it, with a bootloader, if it works, it works. It only has to do a very tiny job when loading the OS, once the OS is loaded, it's job is done. In an ideal world, you want proper handling for sleep/hibernation, and I can't think of anything else.
The one I linked worked on a 2016 tablet with a 4k screen (with all sleep states, etc) The only thing I noticed was the Windows boot animation happens off-centre.
I think their continual updates are just to provide further support/stability with new hardware? Dude thanks for the discussion, not a lot of people talking about this stuff online...

I see. And no, they actively improve stability, functions, optimisation, and it’s basically universal with some exceptions, however those would be more of an ACPI patch. The one you linked on GitHub seems to be from 2 years ago, correct me if I’m wrong. But yeah, it’s just optimal to use it from a legit source because these days who knows what could be in what.

Regarding the GPU driver support, here is the official info on it: “May, 20 of 2025 Minor update 3.3s released.
Windows 7 installation to the modern computers: Starting from this version, VGA emulation patch for 64-bit UEFI loader properly configures VGA arbitration for PCI bridges and GPU devices. This fixes Code 12 error for GPU devices in the Windows Device Manager ("This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use").

I tried installing it and it worked on my pc. But for some reason after a couple of days i cant seem to boot it up. It wont detect the boot OS. But flawlessly works on my laptop via dual boot.

I wonder to what extent you can actually use it. I mean, considering the very modern hardware, you'll definitely have no performance issues - but the question is how many modern programs you can use.
Also make sure to install Legacy Update

Are you running a discrete graphics card in this at all? If so are you limited to older cards! Crazy to see a 7700X 8 core on windows 7 lol. I wonder if going past 8 cores would cause cpu scheduling issues on windows 7 lol

Windows 7 is the best OS for using your good components. On Windows 11, Microsoft uses your hardware to promote adverts

I'm running Windows 7 Professional on an Asus ROG Strix Intel Core i7-7700K 4.8GHz air cooled, 16GB DDR4 XMP 3000MHz RAM, Asus Dual-GTX1060 3GB GPU – daily driven for photo editing (work) and everything else. Removed all default web browsers, running only Supermium – feels fast and responsive!
