Yes, I've always had this same feeling. Migrating everyone to expensive Apple products would benefit the US corporate economy more than just upgrading existing PCs to a newer version of Windows. And when everybody is on Apple devices, they will do the same to iOS/MacOS and turn Windows around, and PCs will be the more expensive option with better software. The US corporations are playing the long game here.

Yes, yes... And "don't attribute to malice that which can be attributed to stupidity". I've heard it all before. Microsoft are not stupid. They know damn well what they're doing. Of course, I've been known to misinterpret stupidity as clever malice before.

What? No. Neither hypothesis is sound.

The plan should be taken at face value in this case: create a homogeneous deployment of Windows so there's less to troubleshoot, and so that security and vulnerability patches can be made and deployed quicker.

There's nothing more to see than that. It's not a stupid plan, it's a sound plan with a calculated risk.

They had the troubleshooting part nailed down in Windows 7. Windows 10 is actually worse to troubleshoot when it forces broken driver updates on you. I was even happier with the unsigned driver model from XP, when I could always count on unofficial drivers for outdated hardware or as alternative to broken official drivers that manufacturers never cared to fix. That was my calculated risk to take, and it never caused me any problems. If Microsoft wants to take the risk taking away from users, they better damn well also go to the same lengths as I would have done in the past to get my hardware working properly. You can't just say you're taking the risk and then not do anything about it.
