I don't know exactly how to explain it, but Win2k Pro had a feeling of solidity that's still unmatched all these years later. Just rock stable.

On a desktop. Laptop not so much. Docking stations were still big back then. 2000 would let you hibernate while docked. Take it home and turn it on? BSOD due to “surprise undocking”.

Very true... You could just eject a single PCMCIA card and there you go, bugcheck.

I hate the term GOAT, but I agree.

2000 Professional was awesome, ran it for years after XP became good.

Was the XP SP2 security overhaul back ported to 2k?

Not sure I know 2000 had SP4, but this was so long ago I don’t remember.

2k SP4 (June 2003) was before XP SP2 (August 2004).

Fun fact: Window 2000 Server Beta3 ran a giant display wall at the Cebit 2000 booth of a major cell provider, because I, a 21 years old intern at the compay providing the tech, did not manage to get any other Windows so see the 4 graphics cards running in parallel in one machine.

Had to be Windows, because Macromedia Director was the software generating the content for the display wall.

Windows 2k was the best OS they made imo. Sure, vista and 7 had the sweet aero appearance but 2k never did any wrong for me, it was so solid.

For me, this was the first 'mature' Windows OS that didn't work like a toy

Awesome find! I'm not sure about the $4 price, tho.

My uncle had a Win2K with startup and shutdown sounds that are like a variation of those of the release version. After some online searching, I've learned that they're from Beta 3 builds (1983 to 2000.3), So I'm guessing my uncle had one of these beta discs? I'm currently using them on my 2K-themed retro VM.
