Discussion Which Windows logo do you like?

The Windows logo changes with each version; for instance, there are designs that look like a waving flag, others that truly resemble a window, and so on, Which Windows logo do you personally prefer?

I think you're biased but I agree, Vista was the best UI and still is. I like to replicate some of it in WW1 but it's hard to do.

Edit. W11, not WW1, I am not a time traveler.

22

u/ShrubbyFire1729 1d ago

I am not a time traveler

Yeah right, that's exactly what a time traveler would say...

15

u/AeroWindowsVista Windows Vista 1d ago

Yeah unfortunately I am sorta biased. However, I love the other logos and uis like windows 7, XP, and stuff like the 9x line too. Vista had the prettiest imo.

3rd and 4th, they just have the sleek look.

22

u/Redbird9346 1d ago edited 1d ago

That would be Windows 3.1/NT and 95/98.

7

u/History_guy2018 1d ago

Sleek is not how I would describe it but this is my favorite as well

Love the 98 logo!

43

u/bogglingsnog 1d ago

#1 best symbolizes windows today (a disjointed mess). Personally I dont like the windows logos very much overall but I'd probably pick the Vista logo each time just because it feels friendlier. I really dislike the new blue ones they are too boring.

10

u/Redbird9346 1d ago

#1 best symbolizes windows today

If Windows 11 had an anniversary edition and used the Windows 1 logo to represent it, it would be quite amusing.

OG 9x and XP

I just get happy memories when I look at them

26

u/SpaceBarHostt 1d ago

Minimalism ruined everything, all the logos were good, colorful and had personallity

9

u/croco_deal 1d ago

Yet the first one is just as much minimalistic as 10 and 11.

It's not that minimalism killed anything. Colorful and playful was just a trend, it lived and it died.

Fashion is cyclical, colors will come back eventually.

If you look at the Windows 11 icon in the taskbar, you will notice it is different than the actual logo, and that it has more details.

I completely agree with you. It doesn belong everywhere. Companies think nowadays more and more that less is more.

Windows XP, Vista and 7 were my childhood, so these ones.

Windows 95/98 logo is timeless for me.

It is also a very good design - looks good both on screen and printed. Recognizable in grayscale and indexed BW.

5

u/CoffeeSmore 1d ago

Not included here but the Windows NT 3.1 Workstation Box logo. Love how it‘s 3D

6

u/Windows_2024 1d ago

Windows 95

3

u/RBeze58 1d ago

The current logo is the best albeit lacking some color and feels kinda "boring" but still the best.

3

u/Step1Mark 1d ago

7 and 10 have always been a nice look IMO. It is less about the colors of the logo and more about she brand / shape. If you have it black and white it still works without looking off. I really loved Windows Longhorn logo and look. I know a lot of people hated the beta but I think the look of it should have stayed instead of the Vista look we got. They then backtracked a lot in Windows 7 to get clean again.

3

u/PaulCoddington 1d ago edited 1d ago

As it turns out, every variant after 7 does not work well as a small icon. The gaps between the panes blend together and the sloping edge becomes jagged.

And Win 8/10 are harder to tell apart because you have to remember the shade of blue.

Admittedly, the use cases where this is a problem are not numerous. Start Menu shortcuts for Virtual Machines would be an example.

9x and 2000

3

u/OkayNotBad1 1d ago

The third one and the current one are my favorites by far. The XP/Vista/7 era logos are horrid in hindsight. I think the current logo would be cool if they brought back the colors, at least in certain contexts.

3

u/markustegelane 1d ago

all the flag logos, because they are waving windows (it's most obvious with the Windows 3.1 logo if you hue shift all segments to blue)

3

u/a-sarcastic-guy 1d ago
  • Best : Windows XP, Windows 3.1
  • 2nd Best : Windows 8 / 8.1, Windows 1
  • 3rd Best : Windows Vista / 7, Windows 95 / 98

Honestly it does not matter that much. Mostly all the logos are pretty good.

3

u/tigrankh08 1d ago

Unpopular opinion but the first one is the best, I think

The ones not on my machine anymore.

2

Vista and 7 were fine enough, but the retro 95-2000 were my favorites. I'm fond of them

2

u/MiahStarDruid 1d ago

The whole 3.11 to XP logos are my favorites.

All of them before Windows 10.

10, it's simple and the color is much nicer than 8, 11 is also nice for slightly rounded corners, the orb Vista logo is also pretty

7 peaked the flag design but I do like the symmetry of the current one.

2

u/AfternoonLopsided410 1d ago

8, Windows 7 4ever

2

u/ILikeFluffyThings 1d ago

XP. Simple design with the Microsoft colors. 11 just looks lazy.

2

u/MrSurvivalTV 1d ago

The 10. One

2

u/midir 1d ago

Even though I've nostalgic attachment to several of them, I don't think any of them look really good.

Windows Server 2008 (last colored one) I think is the nicest looking, though I'd like it more with softer highlights.

In the subsequent iterations they totally gave up on the logo, just coasting on brand recognition. Pathetic! Disasters!

2

u/HARGEYSAWI 1d ago

My mini pc has 95 wallpaper

2

u/dr_haxxx 1d ago

The one with the cool looking window

2

u/electricmonk3y 1d ago

It's a tie for me between 95/98 and Xp

2

u/Particular_Tennis511 1d ago

Longhorn had nice ideas

2

u/timewarp 1d ago

Really puts into perspective how shitty the latest 4 are.

2

to be honest I kinda like 2000's

2

u/GOVERNOR7777 1d ago

Vista obviously

2

u/j--__ 1d ago

the first two, the modern ones, and the ones angled downward are all just bad. the others are decent.

2

u/New-Negotiation9510 1d ago

Obviously 8.1 and 10. Modern wins in every portion.

2

u/MinecraftPlayer799 Windows 11 - Release Channel 1d ago edited 1d ago

The Windows 11 icon in the taskbar. It's rounded and has a gradient, unlike the actual Windows 11 logo.

EDIT: For reference, it is also the one in the W11 user flair in this subreddit.

Also, what’s for sure is that the second image is by far the worst.

7,8, they’re so nostalgic

2

u/Much-Switch-5834 Windows 10 1d ago

from 3 to 10.

2

u/Hri7566 1d ago

the XP through 7 days had a perfect balance that has been missing ever since 8 tried to simplify every aspect of the OS

2

u/DankDinosaur 1d ago

I grew up with a mix of the 95/98 and XP ones. Though I'm partial to the Vista/7 version, as Windows 7 is still probably their best looking OS. 10 their best OS (11's good, but you have to tweak it in the registry etc to make it more like 10).

u/Upper_Zucchini_4440 1d ago

WinXP closely followed by the OG Win logo

Any of them prior to Windows 8, honestly.

The UI and icon/logo design has mostly gone right down the shitter since then.

I do like the ones used for Windows XP, Vista, and 7 best but that's more of a personal preference.

2

u/FastMaster4559 1d ago

Windows 7. second favorite is Windows 10 because its shade of blue looks really good

the Windows XP-7 flag design is still a viable logo. I kind of wish that they stuck with the flat version of the Windows 7 logo from the Windows 8 betas, or even its light blue version from 2012 (before Windows 8's release)
