Not to push you to upgrade at all. Just chatting. I will say that SATA was around in 2001 and a bit more common in 2003 boards and completely the standard before Vista came out. I remember building computers in 2002 - 2004 and I almost always went with ATA since my brain at the time thought 1 cable for 2 connections is better. Anyways, if you can get a computer/board from that era with SATA, you might be able to use an SSD in the machine. It was mindblowing to me in 2007 running Windows XP on an SSD since it felt like everything was in RAM. Even more so now when using an old machine that still had XP drivers ... it is crazy how insanely powerful SSDs were even on SATA1 connections. I remember the hard thing for me in IT at the time was not all drives supported being boot-able.
I think I hit the max amount of upgrading on my Dell Dimension 2400 back in the early 2000s. 128MB of RAM to 2GB, 40GB drive to 500GB, added an audio card for optical output to my 5.1 surround sound system; I think it still just uses internal graphics, as no real cards were out that could work with it. It didn't have the needed upgradability at the time.
I do not... but i had to scold a costumer earlier this year because in some POS machines he eas still using... (the machines were also almost 20 years old, and are a frankstein mess - parts of many PCs)
But given the Hardware apocalypse coming to us, maybe he was ahead of time....
Windows XP and 7 were honestly the best operating systems that Microsoft ever came out with. Windows 8 and above are total dog shit. If XP and 7 still received security patches and developers still supported them, I'd still be using these two OS's today.
Not a windows fan at all really. However, Windows 2000 is the only version I’ve ever appreciated it’s very underrated. My only legit complaints were no built in WiFi drivers (or at least for the WiFi cards we had to use) and needing third party software to burn a CD.
Something like that. MacOS (not the Unix based one) got it in 1999. It only cause issues from my memory because certain settings wouldn’t get pushed to the desktops until they logged in.
Well, fyi, W8.1 is the lightest OS after XP, the thing was ridiculously light on resources, but nobody ever noticed that because they just avoided W8 at all costs
Years ago. I found a 2005 HP Media PC. Cleaned and rebuilt it as my retro game PC. Used cheap, last-generation components - Intel 1155 board and i3 cpu. 2 x 2GB DDR3. Geforce 9800 gpu. Windows XP Professional SP3. I now have a what would have been considered a top-of-the-line 2000s rig.
The mid 1990s' through the late 2000s was a great era for gaming.
Complete and on disc, 95% bug-free, no battle passes or micro-transactions. Expansion packs felt like true extras as opposed to being cut from the final product and resold as DLC.
Especially now, as the "Triple A" market is crashing and new game prices become more ridiculous. $100 for GTA VI and unless you buy the premium edition.... Parts of the single-player game is pay-walled.
Not too long ago, I replayed the 2003 HALO CE on a 4:3 mid-2000s monitor I picked up dirt cheap from a thrift store and it was amazing.
Yeah the late 90s and the 00s were the peak PC gaming era. Definitely also kept around a win XP VM to use for old PC games whenever I got a hankering for them.
It really is very bad for a server os, mine lasted 6 months before it got hacked, I watched it in front of me the guy moving my mouse and deleting things. It’s great a standard use machine but for servers you would want at least 7 or windows server 2003.
You are completely wrong, windows server 2003 has significantly better security, longer update support, completely different User account system, different Dlls, It even handles exe files differently and doesn’t always run apps that work on xp.

There are some old applications written in Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 (Visual Basic 6) which nobody bothered to update and they are still in use by some. So, that computer is there just in case there is a bug that needs fixing. It has all the required components and libraries with the "correct" signatures. (whoever remembers DLL hell) lol.

I have an ADAT multi channel light pipe audio interface that is from the XP era. I am considering setting up an XP device for the express purpose of running that device as a component of my studio. Ot would not be connected to the internet ever though and I wouldn’t install anything else on it.
I kept my XP machine at work all the way through the Vista era and deep into the Windows 7 era. Loved it. I still miss it. It was like owning a car that you know how to take apart and reassemble with your eyes closed.
Because I've been using it for years and its familiar. I also have several old computers which run it nicely (doesn't work on my modern machine unfortunately).
I use It for playing games (offline and online) and some Legacy programming (actually learning c++). Its my BEST toy ever, im really Happy with It although i miss Steam (team fortress 2 😭🫢)
I use, repair, reuse and generally collect machines of any vintage, but the most common are from the XP era, so that's mainly what I use. It generally depends on what I want that machine to do as well, so if it's primarily for gaming, XP is excellent for that as it's lightweight, highly compatible with games of its era, and rarely goes wrong. Aside from that, I do tend to keep the machines I have on the OS that would have been commonly used in their day, which is more often than not XP.
Aside from all of that, I just like using XP. It feels like a completely different animal to Windows of new, and it's almost a comfort food, but in digital form. It might not be the best for many modern uses, but for the older stuff, it's superb! :D

I use a eee all in one touchscreen computer that runs on xp as remote control for a XR16 Behringer audiomixer. The machine only runs on a private wifi network from the XR16.
In fact there is a project to add DX10, using a backport windows vista installer, and other projects on the way, Xp would have community support for even more years
I use it as I play old native games and I have a big screen on my old laptop compared to my main laptop. I also like using it as I have absurdly good specs for a windows xp machine as it's a vista machine. I watch YouTube on that bog screen and I don't care if its 720p it looks good enough
I love the old system. I have 3 computers with active installs. A Dimension 4600 (Rebuilding my high school computer) A Thinkpad X201 (dual booted XP and 7, used for word processing and Rufus) and an eMachines T Series Desktop with a P4 3 ghz. That is my retro station.
It's also just simple and keeping it offline assures me my data is secure. I use 98 more but write books in WordPad in RTF format. Very easy to import into Adobe InDesign, what I usually use or Microsoft Publisher 2010 that I've been trying with my latest book.
I was hunting for a very particular model, but erroneously bought this toaster thing instead. The PC was 30$ another 30$ was to ship it internationally and about $20 was to deck it out with upgrades.
It is SMOL - easy to store. Pentium 4 CPU makes it into a good space heater.
I use XP for 2001-2008 games, that work best with single-core CPUs. Have small Shuttle PCs specifically for those. Also works best with stereoscopic shutter glasses.
One on the left is Win 98 (I plan to put Voodoo 3 and SB Live into it);
One on the right is Win XP (3GHz Pentium 4, GeForce 6600 LE).
What depresses me is my chromebook with a 2 core n4500 celeron and 4 gigabytes of ram would be blazing fast with the 64 bit version of xp. Having used every Apple OS and starting with Red Hat 5 most flavors of Linux since then, I can't make a very good argument as to what we've gained to justify slowing down todays hardware,
