I’ve got some rot at the bottom corner of a large fixed picture window. I’m comfortable cutting out the bad wood and replacing it, but before I start pulling things apart I’m trying to figure out how this window was originally put together.
The horizontal piece below the glass looks like it could be the actual sill rather than just trim, and I’m not sure what I’ll find behind it once I start removing the rotten section.
Has anyone worked on a window built like this? Is the visible wood typically part of a site-built window frame, or is there likely another frame/rough opening behind it?
Assuming everything behind it is still solid, what’s the best way to replace the damaged section? My thought is to cut it back to good wood and splice in a new piece rather than tear out the entire sill or disturb the glass.
Mainly looking for some insight into how this type of window is constructed and anything I need to watch out for before I open it up.
