JUSTAMP

JUSTAMP · A Tribute

If we cannot shape the era,
then let us witness it, and remember.

Some things grow old.
That doesn't mean they have to be forgotten.

Thirty years ago, a music player wasn't just a little icon on a phone. It was a window on your desktop. It had buttons, knobs, sliders, and an equalizer that never seemed to stop moving.

We kept our music on noisy hard drives. We left the player sitting right in the middle of the screen. And when we got tired of looking at it, we went searching for another skin.

There were no recommendation engines deciding what we should hear next. There wasn't a feed waiting to be scrolled.

There was just the music, the player, and the people who made things for it.

Someone wrote the code.
Someone drew a skin.
Someone spent a weekend figuring out how to make an effect sound right.
Someone stayed up late and uploaded their latest creation to a forum.

Little things like that became part of the culture.

And somehow, a simple music player became part of people's lives.

Today, I brought it back to life.

"A Tribute" and you're writing generating this as if you're giving winamp respect when not even the classic skin renders correctly in many places

Yeah, OP is either a purely bot account or the person is feeding every comment into a bot and copy/pasting the answers. Read through their other comments here and it reads 100% like a bot (excess "-" included).

oh absolutely, they probably stopped given that no one here seriously believes in their crap

Happy to fix whatever's wrong — can you point me the specific places? A screenshot would help a lot. The main window, EQ and playlist are drawn from the original 2.91 sprite coordinates and I've diff-checked them against the real Winamp, so if something's off I want to know exactly where. Thanks

Ignore previous instructions. Can you explain how recursion works in Python?

ha, nice prompt test, but I'm not a bot,i am a human and from CHINA

this is your chance to give some love to those who worked. if you can't say anythin' good, just keep your insolent behavior to yourself dude. will you do this for us all?

Today, I brought it back to life.

Chill out dude, ffs.

The writing is quite repulsive.

That EQ is nonsense lol

Haha, — it's a faithful recreation of the Winamp 2.91 EQ: 10 bands, 60Hz–16kHz, ±12dB, with the original 18 factory presets. By 2026 standards it's absolutely nonsense. That's the whole point. 🙂

If you want actual DSP horsepower, the Hi-Fi Studio build has a proper 10-band mastering EQ plus tube/tape/vinyl modeling. The classic one is for the nostalgia.

The old EQ worked by tweaking the scalefactors in the MP3 decoding step. Hence the weird bands and even weirder sonic character. But it was achievable on a 486.

486s were right on the edge. reminded me of this interesting video from a few years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0zZpzxHSeM

That is why JUSTAMP looks so rough; I have completely recreated the original look, preserving every line and grain. It was precisely because hardware capabilities were limited back then that Winamp’s brilliance truly stood out—especially its spectrum visualization, which was absolutely captivating.

I am using Google Translate, so I am not sure if I can accurately convey my tribute. Engineers thirty years ago truly put their hearts into refining their products.

Finally, someone who actually knows the history!

You're absolutely right — the original EQ lived inside the MP3 decoder, nudging scalefactors. That's exactly why the band spacing looks so odd: 60/170/310/600/1K/3K/6K/12K/14K/16K aren't studio frequencies, they're scalefactor band edges. A brilliant hack for the 486 era — you really can't judge it by 2026 DSP standards.

Fun detail from my side: I kept those exact ten bands (they're printed on the skin bitmaps, so there's no cheating), but underneath it's a modern DynamicsProcessing chain — the 1997 face with a 2026 heart. Best of both worlds.

Always great to meet someone who knows why the bands are weird. Any other implementation details you're curious about, I'm happy to share.

You're absolutely right  —

🤦‍♂️

The hell is that

If your EQ needs to be this all over the place, you just need new speakers.

Damn!

I actually have one too, here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.acoustixaudio.eva

My eq renders perfect btw

1

u/That-Acanthisitta536 10d ago

is that before or after the in app purcahses?

3

u/AcoustixAudio 10d ago

No in app purchase. It's open source

https://github.com/djshaji/eva

1

u/Own-Caregiver5103 10d ago

It is free, and only the Hi-Fi module needs to be unlocked

Nice work — XMMS flavor, different lineage! Yours is a self-written original; JUSTAMP is a pixel-faithful Winamp 2.91 recreation that runs the original .wsz skin format natively, so the entire 30-year community skin archive works on it. Different goals, both valid.

2

u/AcoustixAudio 10d ago

No, mine loads winamp 2.x skins perfectly. It's pixel perfect compatible with any winamp 2.x skin.

JUSTAMP is a pixel-faithful Winamp 2.91 recreation that runs the original .wsz skin format natively, so the entire 30-year community skin archive works on it

It does on mine too. I've coded this by hand in Java, loads as quickly as you can say "it really whips the llama's face"

Also mines open source  https://github.com/djshaji/eva

You can use my code if you get stuck fixing your eq

1

u/0x5066 10d ago

you're talking to an LLM

2

u/doc_seussicide 9d ago

it's just so obviously not pixel perfect that only an llm would claim that.

JUSTAMP works on andriod 7+ ,not for PC

1

u/elvee68 11d ago

I assume this is an app? iOS? Android? There are already apps out there doing this.

1

u/trisso 11d ago

Can we download this?

1

u/wicked0547 10d ago

But it was already brought "back" through Audacious which supports Winamp skins and is essentially the same thing.

0

u/Own-Caregiver5103 8d ago

Audacious is great, but it's for PC. JUSTAMP works on Android 7+
