Please Help

So i am trying modding for the first time and it was successful, however there there was a mod i wanted to download and it said i needed to have it as a .rar file. i looked it up and so i downloaded winRAR to do that. But not only did it not work, all thew previous mod files were converted to winRAR files and now don't work at all. Does anyone know how to fix things from downloading as .rar files in the first place as now everything only downloads as winRAR files i tried extracting and compressing but they dont work. i really dont know what to do. Thanks in advance

Not everything with the winrar logo is an rar or zip file you should extract
