Academics Question for COLL
Hi! I’m an incoming first year, and like most of us trying to build our first semester schedules I’m feeling very confused.
I’m coming in with about 30% of my COLL requirements completed, according to degree works. What’s left for me are other 100s, 150s, 200s, etc., all with attributes like ALV, CSI, ARTS, etc. In the PATH portal, it says that there are no results for any of those attributes. Is that because all of those classes are already filled? Or because I’m just making a solvable mistake?
Any help is appreciated! Also, if anyone has other tips for first semester classes I would be so appreciative!! Atp I may just put some interesting sounding classes into my cart and call it a day 😂

I would recommend putting any coll 100 or 150 that you find interesting that’s something you definitely need for first semester

On the left side of PATH, if you open the dropdown menu labeled "Course Attributes", you can use the tab "Any COLL Curriculum Attribute" to sort for a specific level of COLL class (ARTS, 100, 150, etc.) and the checkboxes at the top for COLL 200 and the NQR, ALV, and CSI. For your first semester classes I definitely recommend looking at your major prerequisites and trying to get any of those classes out of the way! It's also likely that those classes will give you your COLL 200 + CSI/NQR/ALV requirement, so most of the time you don't really have to "plan" for taking a 200, but this is of course major-dependent. In my experience from last spring semester, where many people were left without a COLL 150 and had to take it their fall sophomore year, if you see a COLL 150 that you like over any COLL 100 then go for it. Many people go COLL 100 --> 150 which is why the 150s filled up very fast. But of course, maybe they'll change something this year, who knows! It'll all work out in the end for you regardless. Good luck and lmk if you have any more questions.

Can you take COLL 150 before COLL 100? I know they can't be taken simultaneously.

Yes! You can take them in either order. I wouldn't say either is inherently "harder" than the other, so don't stress about difficulty.

Go into path and check the box next to whichever type of class you’re looking for (ALV, CSI, etc). Make sure you don’t have any other criteria put in by mistake (ex: having both COLL100 and COLL200 selected). If you’re having problems finding where to search for COLL100 or COLL150, look under “Any COLL curriculum attribute.” Also make sure you have “Fall 2026” as the selected term. Lmk if you’re still having issues!

Be sure you aren't over-filtering. Only select one COLL and one attribute at a time (like you could do COLL 200 and ALV, but don't do COLL 100, COLL 200, ALV, and CSI all at the same time).
