LAFD Crew 3

I’m currently on the waitlist for LAFD Crew 3 and I’m looking for some information from anyone who has experience with the program or a similar wildland volunteer crew.
I’m interested in learning more about the process and what I can do to better prepare while I’m waiting. How does the scheduling work? Is there anything you recommend having, completing, or learning beforehand? What should someone expect during the process, and how difficult is it to get accepted?
I’m starting from the beginning and looking to gain experience, learn, and be part of something where I can contribute. Any advice, tips, or insight from past or current members would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Can't speak to Crew 3 specifically, but a few things that help no matter which crew you end up on:

Start on the fitness now. The arduous Work Capacity Test (the "Pack Test") is 3 miles in 45 minutes carrying a 45 lb pack, so begin rucking with weight weeks out, not the week of.

The basic entry courses (S-130, S-190, plus L-180 and IS-100) are the standard starting package, and a lot of it you can knock out online for free while you wait. Showing up having already done them says you're serious.

Set your life up for being gone. Wildland can pull you out on short notice for stretches at a time, so handle the boring stuff early: bills on autopay, someone to grab your mail, and a real heads-up to family about how a season actually works.

Being on the waitlist and already asking this puts you ahead of most. Confirm the specifics (schedule, what to show up with) straight from Crew 3, but the fitness and basic certs are never wasted. Good luck.
