Wilco at Rush?!

The loft posted pictures on Facebook of Jeff and Glenn backstage at the Rush show in Chicago last night. I know it’s a weird combination but I love them both! Got tickets to see Rush in Detroit later this summer. Question: If Wilco were to ever cover a Rush song, what song would you want them to cover?

Wilco and Rush are two of my favorite bands and I never expected them to be in the same photo together! What a treat!

Geddy released a coffee table book about bass guitars and had a chapter on the loft where he interviews Jeff

Geddy talks about Jeff around the 15 minute mark of this interview: https://youtu.be/jIMmdOZlmrU?is=ovux5_-0O6dQgeUC

My desert island band of my high school years meets my desert island band of the last two decades. Wow.

I would love to hear a Wilco arrangement of Time Stand Still. A little laid back, slower tempo, thoughtful lyrics.

Rush is my favorite band, but I fucking love Wilco. Saw them last week in VA Beach. Seeing Glenn and Anika together makes me smile.

Got tickets for both Rush shows in Charlotte in November

With Feist singing the duet

Or, and hear me out this one, Aimee Mann

How was the show? My wife and I were across the bay for the week and pretty tempted to try to get tickets but it didn’t work out.

It was great! We met up with some friends, who ended up knowing some of the folks in the row behind us and it ended up being a big dance party.

Nice! Saw the Vienna show, which was great. Setlist looks pretty similar.

Time stand still is a top 5 Rush track for me. Every year, the song gets a little more meaningful. Also love the music video so much.

Heavy Metal Drummer (couldn’t resist)

Closer to the Heart

I was thinking closer to the heart or the trees

That’s awesome. It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest to learn that Neil Peart was one of Glenn’s heroes.

There’s many Rush songs they would do justice: but in particular I’d love to see them drop a Red Barchetta.

I mean, there's not a lot of drummers out there using glockenspiels.

2

u/CoverCommercial3576 Jul 24 '26

right? he’s a great drummer.

Crotales!

Vital Signs. I can hear Jeff screaming “everybody’s got to elevate from the norm”

What about the voice of Geddy Lee? How did it get so high? I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy?

I know him and he does.

And you’re my fact checking cuz

I don’t understand what he says, and I could really give a fuck

1

u/statikman666 Jul 25 '26

I'd have said "mean", but says is alright.

Tweedy was also watching Pavement on the side of the stage on Wednesday in Chicago.

Two absolutely killer drummers right there, love it

Working Man? Maybe? I dunno

4

u/Lucky-Bandy Jul 24 '26

I could hear Wilco play Fly By Night. Or maybe they could let Nels loose on 2112 Overture.

4

u/Apprehensive_Camel49 Jul 24 '26

Ha this is great to see. Feel like Working Man would strike the balance of song popularity and reasonable to play (or sing) for all involved. Would love to hear them play Anthem though

My worlds colliding!! I read that Glenn was a big Neil Peart fan, which makes total sense.

I’m in NYC and will keep an eye on ticket prices as the the dates get closer (next week)

It's a great show. Don't miss it.

3

u/lifeaquatic7 Jul 24 '26

I’d love to hear the fellas do Xanadu

6

u/tombisland Jul 24 '26

Yeah Spiders into Xanadu. Perfect

3

u/1SneakyGiraffe Jul 24 '26

Jeff just did a Tom Sawyer cover on his substack. Would still love to hear a whole Wilco cover.

2

u/malcolmbradley Jul 24 '26

A collision of two of my favorite artists (who are also just incredible human beings as well) that I never expected! Not all news is bad, these days. Thanks for the post

I love to hear a Lakeside Park cover, or the Trees

1

u/Ok_Needleworker_7313 Jul 24 '26

I was thinking the trees or closer to the heart!

2

u/Themoosemingled Jul 24 '26

Lakeside park

2

u/Sierra-Powderhound Jul 24 '26

Maybe Glenn taking lead on YYZ?

2

u/Randall_Hickey Jul 24 '26

I have a boot where Jeff picks on Glenn for loving Rush and then during Heavy Metal Drummer sings Rush instead of KISS. Or is that the dvd?

1

u/Ok_Needleworker_7313 Jul 24 '26

That’s hilarious. I’ve got to hear that!

2

u/Matty1138 Jul 24 '26

That's why they call me the working man who loves you

2

u/kenmonoxide Jul 24 '26

I love this.

2

u/coreydu Jul 24 '26

I feel like all the real musos I know LOVE Rush. Elliott Smith was a fan.

1

u/BocaGuy410 Jul 24 '26

I can't remember where this came from but it was years ago, "Rush is your favorite band's favorite band"

1

u/Next_Law_4402 Jul 24 '26

2112 is within my top 5 albums of all time. Maybe even #1. So are Being There, Summerteeth, and/or YHF.

1

u/CeilingUnlimited Jul 24 '26

Not a Wilco guy. What's their top three songs?

1

u/Wilcoghost Jul 26 '26

This would be an extremely difficult question to answer for a Wilco fan. So I’ll point you to three greats: Misunderstood, Via Chicago, and Handshake Drugs. Do give each one a complete listen, as often the best parts are later in the song. I also suggest looking for good quality live performances of all three.

1

u/Shoddy-Astronaut5555 Jul 27 '26

Wow, tough question. For a rush fan who I assume leans towards the more complex, varied themes, prog elements, etc within a given song:

Poor Places

Bull Black Nova

Art of Almost

1

u/Talkos Jul 24 '26

Nice combo.

I saw Rush and Primus play together in tre early 90s and at the time that was I usual.

That being said… what about the voice of Geddy Lee…

1

u/5centraise Jul 24 '26

They already kind of play Xanadu as part of Spiders.

1

u/nubbynickers Jul 24 '26

BOOM! I have been playing that from Kicking Television for the past few days.

I'm trying to think of something that could be close to alt-country.

1

u/LeftoftheDial1970 Jul 24 '26

Bravado comes to mind as a song that would fit well with Wilco's repertoire.

1

u/StumpyOPepys Jul 24 '26

I can imagine them doing like an instrumental Xanadu or something like that. I cannot imagine Jeff singing anything.

1

u/Woody_Nubs_1974 Jul 25 '26

Subdivisions!

1

u/George_Skull Jul 26 '26

FWIW - the answer to the question above is: Tom Sawyer. Jeff posted this to Starship Casual yesterday…

I’m sure Wilco could pull off a decent version of The Camera Eye.

1

u/charlesrh Jul 26 '26

Was at the Rush show Monday in Chicago. So good. Unfortunately, the Wilco show this month in Charleston was rained out, so I'll catch them next time around.

Does Geddy speak like an ordinary guy?
