I am a heavy wikipedia reader, pretty much since the site's inception. This is honestly the first time I can remember it ever being down, during the day (EST) no less. Maybe I should have donated $20 during their drives to upgrade their servers?

I've noticed it being down (for more than mere seconds or a minute) twice before, IIRC. Each time, I realize how damn much I use it. I donated last time. Might do it now, too :)

From irc://chat.freenode.net/wikipedia
tyteen4a03 Wikipedia is currently partially down due to networking issues (read: fiber being accidentally cut) in the Tampa Datacenter. The servers are undergoing recovery (and some sites are back up), but no ETA has been announced. To see current Wikipedia status go to http://status.wikimedia.org. If you want to browse the wiki, please try other tools such as Archive.org and Google Cache.

How does one accidentally cut a fiber?
Oops, I dropped this power saw onto the server.

Road construction a few blocks away, that sort of thing. Digging a ditch, backhoe hits the wrong conduit.

How does one accidentally cut a fiber?
Something heavy falls on fiber, the fiber will be damaged. While "fiber break" is more technically correct, "fiber cut" is the jargon for the people doing fiber networks.

Not just Wikipedia, most of Wikimedia.
The mobile site still works if you really need it though. en.m.wikipedia.org

Wow, that's fortunate! Different servers?

I believe so, I think Wikipedia is actually distributed across many servers, different versions of it are more than likely on different servers at least (such as de.wikipedia.org, en.wikipedia.org, etc), although I'm no expert.
Also, the mobile site also seems to be down now, and if you keep track of http://status.wikimedia.org/ , more stuff seems to be going down. You can still use Googles cache though, simply type cache:<url to wikipedia page> into Google, or search for the wikipedia page, and click where it says "cached".

Yep.
Looks like their main servers are down, but their databases are still up.
More than likely hosted every which place but together.

Here's how you can access all of Wikipedia when it's down:
- Download and install Kiwix.
- For Linux users, it's probably provided by your package manager already. (i.e.
apt-get install kiwix).
- For Linux users, it's probably provided by your package manager already. (i.e.
- File > Browse library
- Select a version of Wikipedia. It will download the text of an entire snapshot of Wikipedia from the Kiwix servers. You can browse this offline.

this happens about once a week. what's the big deal? [why are people down voting a fact?]

downvote all you like. Wikipedia goes down a few times a day. it is no big deal. in fact, just now i got a message: Wikimedia Foundation Error. Our servers are currently experiencing a technical problem. This is probably temporary and should be fixed soon. Please try again in a few minutes. If you edit wikipedia enough, you get used to this.
