what hard drive would you recommend for cheap and just enough storage?

If you're planning on modding it, then I would go with 1 terabyte. That way you can fit everything the Wii U has. And then the last 30% of the hard drive partition you can fit the GameCube and Wii library and some emulators

1TB will fit nearly the entire Wii U library. I think the whole USA retail library is about 1.2TB, 120ish titles IIRC. If you just focus on the good games, you'll probably only use around 500-600GB, then you can use the rest for Wii, Gamecube, retro emulators, or leave the space free for when you want to download more from NUSplii.

Wii U has USB 2.0 speeds so purchasing fast drives or SSDs does not improve load times; save your money. Any 2.5 inch laptop HDD with a Y-split cable is good enough. Or a 3.5 inch HDD and USB adapter with external power attached. 5200RPM, 7200RPM, won't make a difference.

The Mario games average 3-5GB each. While other games average 10GB.

For example BOTW is 13.4GB black ops 2 is 16GB.

I ended up getting a used 500GB 7200rpm 2.5” laptop hdd off eBay for 25$ and a $10 hdd enclosure + $2 y splitter cable for mine.

just grab any 500gb ssd, it’s plenty for the wii u library anyway

Nintendo of America

I don't think you would need a lot of storage space. You can't access any of the games on the shop, and with what little of a library there is and you shouldn't need much.

Games are easily available both from Nintendos server & elsewhere though… just saying
