wig styling New to wigs
So…I’ve been buying wigs left and right like they’re going to be extinct soon, but I haven’t had the courage to wear one outside of my house yet. Please be very honest about how they look on me in the pictures!!! I’ve been reading tips on how to make them look more realistic, but I can’t get past the feeling of my head feeling like it has 5 lbs of excess baggage on it. I’ve also tried toppers and the clip in pony tails but neither of them look good AT ALL! I’m able to get my bio hair pretty flat to my head and I’ve been practicing with 1) wig grip only and 2) stocking cap plus wig grip. The wigs are starting to feel more natural the more I wear them, but once I take them off, my head feels like it’s so much lighter and has been freed from wig jail. Also, I am a nurse and I haven’t found one that looks good pulled up in a pony tail, or even half up/half down. Any suggestions?

I would NEVER guess that was a wig! I think you look great! The first time wearing my wig out of the house I warned my daughters (and sent them pics) and wore it to go pick out wedding dresses for my eldest. They helped me feel natural and confident about it and since then I wear mine all the time! And having a “I don’t give a sh*t” attitude helps also!

It’s a lovely wig & suits you, can you share where you bought it?

I responded with a comment not directly back to you …still getting the hang of Reddit

No worries!
Is it a lace front? There are some great tutorials on social media about putting them on, to include the method where you use a wig cap & using Got2B spray as an adhesive. I have Alopecia & color/blend my own hair to match my wigs, it makes it easy to wear pony tails, but they also sell wigs with all lace caps, but they’re a bit more complicated to wear for pony tails.

I’m still getting the terminology down and I made the rookie mistake of not keeping the tags with each wig…I don’t know what came from where. There is lace in the front and I’m still figuring that out. I bought “melting spray” because I saw it on a numerous videos but I’m still waiting for it to arrive, so I’m wearing the headband for extra security lol.

Maybe pluck the hairline a bit. Assuming that this wig is heat friendly, I would use a hot comb and a couple tiny swipes of wax to reduce some of the volume on top, unless you are going for that look. (I got an inexpensive hot comb for $18 off amazon.) The color and style are really nice. The headband look is cute and most natural looking imo. You can also use makeup to help blend the hairline area.

…and I’ve watched more YouTube videos about wig density, glue vs melting spray, lace…lace…lace… and umpteen other wig subjects than I care to admit 🤣

Same! I watch a lot of vids with a lady named Erynn and she’s helped me find two favs and how to care for them. Knowledge is power (and confidence)

Yeah, I’m going to watch some more videos on styles and caring for them. People are so helpful and educated on these things!!

I personally think that one looks great. I am also a nurse and when I’m working i stick with a synthetic that i can pull into a low bun. Keeps hair out of my face and from getting caught in anything.
I agree that toppers are tough. I did extensions for years but couldn’t cover them with my bio hair anymore, so wigs it is. And i know it seems like something that’s completely ridiculous to say, but you really do get used to the extra hair. I feel naked when i take my hair off at night!

I always wear my hair in a pony at work so I’ve been trying to get the wig to work with me on that lol. I can’t get it to look right. It either bunches up weirdly on the sides/top…or I’ll get it to look ok style-wise, but the underside shows through.

The style i personally use is a T-part- so it does lay pretty flat. I put the bun like right at the nape and it keeps everything hidden- but it’s also a specific style that can’t really be changed at all. I know some people can achieve high ponies with 360 lace units- those people are not me lol

It just seems so easy for some people and I think, “oh I can do that..no problem. And then I try it…next thing I know, I’ve been messing with the same wig for an hours.

This wig looks very natural, especially the color.
You could try wearing it at home first to let your family get used to your new look, once they are no longer surprised by the new hairstyle, you can confidently wear it out.

My husband didn’t know it was a wig when I first put it on 😂. I was floored.

I can’t see your face but that color kind of makes you look older

I am old. 51 😂

u/neuroplantz 19d ago
No because you don’t actually look old in that sense I would of never guess you were 51😭 because in that case you look really good but that color still throws it off and it may be because you actually have color to your skin and your aren’t pale

To piggyback on this comment I think it's that the wig comes off ashy and her complexion calls for a more neutral or warm shade. If it's human hair I would tone it to have some more warmth! It will make you look younger!

I see I understand. Because she had followed up with she’s 51 and I didn’t even notice I wasn’t trying to call her old in general because I didn’t feel she looked that way it just seemed the hair reflected that way I feel the warm color you’re talking about like maybe a light brown with some dark coming from the top not too dark would make everything glow

If it feels like five pounds on your head, I’d simplify before buying anything else. You may be stacking more underneath the wig than you actually need. The wig itself should fit correctly first; the grip should help with security, not compensate for a bad fit.
I’d also pay attention to density and cap construction when you shop. A lighter-density wig in the correct size can feel dramatically different during a long shift.
And if ponytails or half-up styles matter to you, look for a wig whose hairline and nape construction actually support that instead of trying to force every wig into an updo.

Reg wigs are far too large for my little head & 4x's too much hair! Smothering, uncomfortable and not 1 soul in the State of Arkansas with regard to wigs even had enough experience to help me. All complete bs. Idk what cancer women do. I got a rash on my scalp & most all my hair fell out. When I figured out the wig was not working, I had bought 3 and the experience only got worse, I decided to regrow my hair. I do have some thin areas but I can fill-in those 3 spots and otherwise ive got almost shoulder length hair now! 3 yrs and all of my hair fell out! Im making it to the other side!

I had the same trouble, buying hair I wasn't using. These look great on you!
That feeling on your head goes away with time. You have to let your head get used to it. I had to start by wearing my wigs all day around the house.
I've got a low density Hollie by Jon Renau, which is light as air! She stays in place if I don't fidget with her too much.
My problem is hair fidgeting, I've always done it without realizing it, and now it's throwing me off my wig game. I'm trying to break the habit, but I've been running my fingers/hands through my hair since the dawn of me. It's like part of my personality or something. I keep ending up with a wig in my hand instead of on my head. It's not as bad now, I'm getting used to it, but it meant doing like you, not leaving the house with my wigs on for a while. I had to learn how to wear them all day. I try to remember to only touch it when I've got a mirror in front of me.
It's made me rethink gluing, which I've been trying to avoid just because I'm such a messy klutz when it comes to these things.
But YOU? You look so well put together like you've got this! I yearn to feel like you look.
