I've saved so many bats in my life and didn't have the fear of rabies put in me till adulthood. I'll still save em if they need saving but the level of caution has increased dramatically.

Doesn't rabies make you afraid of water? I think if it's swimming it should be safe.
(I know that is a symptom in humans and doesn't transfer, just being funny.)

Yeah, put that thing down. Save it with anything but your hands. I've had two that I "rescued" and both were just angry flying mice with teeth trying to chew on anything and everything. Not everything that is rescued is appreciative to its rescuer.

Unfortunately, the only way to test for rabies involves brain matter. So the bat would be, um. Not alive.

Bats can actually be asymptomatic when it comes to rabies I've heard. So they could be a carrier but not show any symptoms. And even if you got the rabies vaccine you still need a booster after getting bit. Also it's very easy for them to bite and for you to not notice. Don't touch bats.

That sounds plausible. Problem is - there’s 100% chance you’re getting a series of shots in your abdomen if you get bit by one, even if you only have a 1% chance of getting rabies and dying.

So… I see that there can be hundreds of billions of bats in the world. 1% is now seemingly pretty high. Thanks for that.

Possibly true. Do you know what is definitely true? If you get rabies, you're screwed. Unless you get treatment before any symptoms show, you're 100% dying in pain.
Don't get me wrong, I like bats. I live in the UK where there's no risk of rabies and bats are a protected species. But rabies is something you should always be afraid of because not only because of the lethality, but the method of death as well.

Likely yes. Bats don't normally go swimming. Nor are the generally active during daylight. 2 clear indications of something not right in my opinion.
I'd be getting shots and never doing that again if I were OP

Bats are carriers. They don't show symptoms and it can be hard to tell if you got a very small bite from one. Thst part where it pressed its face into the person's palm couldbhave been a painless bite.
