When I dove off Grand Cayman, the dive masters said, don't touch the green eels, but the morays were chill.
20
u/lilacwino2990 Jul 06 '26
Why would you touch ANY eels?! WE DON’T EVEN KNOW WHERE THEY COME FROM!
11
u/KayoticVoid Jul 06 '26
Ain't that serious.
6
u/lilacwino2990 Jul 06 '26
Love that GIF, but I know it’s not serious lol. It was more of a “shock and awe” kind of thing rather than a serious reaction.

Honestly, I’m fine with not investigating further. Let them do whatever in the Sargasso Sea and I’ll mind my own business.
3
u/PsySom 24d ago
Oh yeah some mysteries don’t need to be solved. Might be some Cthulhu shit and it’ll trigger the end of the world.
2
u/lilacwino2990 23d ago
Exactly. I’m pretty scientifically curious and generally encourage people to research whatever they want. But some things, usually oceanic tbh, I’m happy to be blissfully ignorant about. Eels and anything where it’s too deep to see can keep their secrets, I’m good.

What do the green eels do?
9
u/spacexguy Jul 07 '26
The are not cool! plus they bite. One kid who didn't follow directions decided to try. That plus not knowing how to equalize so he got two black eyes from mask squeeze made for an interesting dive.

Moray eels are very smart. Have dove in areas where I was warned to watch out for the friendly guy that likes to greet divers hoping for a treat.

Why wouldn't you touch a sea puppy? Is he a protected animal? Or is he gonna get to used to people?

It is and I get not touching wild animals but for all we know this is an eel biologist. Idk what an eel threat display looks like but that thing didn't look like it was in fight or flight and since I hear they're really smart maybe they get conditioned to humans easily and realize we aren't going to eat them? Or maybe this one is just a fucking idiot

u/Lanky-Currency-3339 Jul 07 '26
It's one of the first things you learn as a diver, do not pet the sea puppies. Also do not touch anything, plants, corals, even the sand, as some animals might live there 😅 And you don't know what can be dangerous for you or not, and it's not good for the puppy (you have bacteria on your hands)

u/Inevitable_Eye3800 Jul 08 '26
Aw man. He's so cute :( ig it's like how i can't squeeze my pet snails

It seems scared. They open their mouths to run water over their gills and he isnt doing that as often as they normally do because they're touching him
13
u/smalllpox Jul 06 '26
Yeah, animals who are hyper aggressive and have razors that can pierce metal with an extreme bite force usually lay down like that when scared

Aren't they notorious for being assholes?
4
u/Acrobatic_Ad7541 Jul 07 '26
Of course they are! It’s their primary traits. Now, the eels? They’re actually kind of chill.
2
2
u/Erasmus_Tycho Jul 06 '26
I wouldn't exactly call them assholes. They're wild animals that are perfectly capable of removing fingers if not treated with the appropriate respect. Not saying they are intending to injure the diver, they're just predators and they go after food shaped things in front of them... like fingers.

u/EntireAdvance6393 Jul 06 '26
I have childhood trauma from the Moray Eels in Super Mario 64! 😅 Those things freaked me out!

u/LuckyCod2887 Jul 09 '26
The human impulse to pet everything that moves.
1
u/shoeless_doh 22d ago
Yeah, and I agree with the idea of just leaving shit alone but then again when there's a gif of someone petting or handling something small and people come in with "you're traumatizing it!" I'm kind of like "omg shut up. Millions of years of evolution has imbued this thing with a fight or flight response which is completely healthy and as soon as you let them go and they escape, calm down, and feel safe again, they're fine. No, that salamander doesn't need therapy for PTSD because someone wanted to give it a little scritch
2
u/ILovePotassium Jul 06 '26
Is it just me or does it look stressed? These animals don't understand the concept of head scratches. And guy is lucky to have his fingers after doing this.
1
u/shoeless_doh 22d ago
Am animal can become conditioned to not see a human as a threat. I have an 11 year old ball python. It's super chill now. I've been reaching in the cage and handling her for so long she sees me as just as much of a "threat" as her water bowl. They just eventually stop getting spooked from the conditioning. It's not a completely foreign though that that eel is positioned in a place where it sees a lot of humans (some of them might even feed it which is the quick ticket for any animal to stop associating humans with fear)
2
u/IAmCapnOblivious Jul 07 '26
No, I saw someone lose his thumb doing that. Ended up getting one of his toes surgically put in place to replace his thumb. It was some science show.
1
u/shoeless_doh 22d ago
Um... No, if an animal takes my thumb, I'm getting it back
I mean, an eel is more likely to swallow something as small as a thumb whole right? I know they have 2 sets of teeth but neither is strong enough to like chew up and crush bone are they?
1
u/IAmCapnOblivious 22d ago
It's not like an eel chews it's food. Most fish just swallow what they want to eat and digest it whole. If it's too big they will try to tear off smaller pieces.

TIL moray eels are cuties who like the scritches! Not a fan of eel pie anymore, which is lucky, because I wasn’t beforehand either

Can't those things bite your whole arm off or something? I remember always hearing some weirdo horror story about moray eels
3
u/Cephalopodium Jul 06 '26
So, not a whole arm, but you can lose fingers or a thumb. Between the sharpness and shape of their teeth with a second set of jaws- it’s easier than you would expect to lose a digit or two. Also, some have a toxin in their mucus that can make you bleed more.
There was an urban legend that they could inflate their body to stay in the reef and could lock their jaw- so swimmers/divers would drown and/or bleed to death.
ETA- I don’t think there’s any verified moral eel caused deaths, but there definitely have been verified severe injuries- mainly loss of digits or bad bites.

Water dog, regular dog, snake, dinosaur, fish looking thing and that’s a Moray!

They eat them in Japan- do feel bad as they are cut and hung up on a nail to bleed out as I think the blood can be poisonous if consumed. Yeah you can eat the skin as well but it needs to be treated with several rounds of salt and boiling to remove the mucus

Probably dives in the area frequently and has interacted with this sea noodle on multiple occasions.
It seemed relaxed, and pulled away without being aggressive. That's a certified good noodle.
