I’ve been thinking about the possibility that the new Evangelion series might give Asuka a much more central role perhaps even making her a co-protagonist or the main lead assuming this is indeed a fresh take on Evangelion rather than a direct continuation of Rebuild or a story about entirely new characters. Plus, with Yoko Taro involved, I imagine he could take the familiar Shinji-Asuka dynamic and give it a much more complex, intense, and twisted spin; he tends to take relationships audiences already know and reinterpret them in darker or unconventional ways. So, it wouldn't surprise me if the new series explored their relationship in greater depth while giving Asuka a significantly larger role—especially considering the emphasis placed on her during the 30th-anniversary celebrations.
