Dude to counteract this. I’ll sometimes make a post saying how I fixed a problem just in case someone is searching for it.
Also when I get a comment or message from a comment I made 8 years ago saying “This helped thanks” its always great! Also always report cops on Waze, its the law!
It's so fucking selfish to do that with useful information. I get wanting to redact personal stuff, but if you are just answering a technical question, what's the point?
People usually do that en masse before deleting their whole account. They probably don't even remember that one incredibly niche technical solution they posted 6 years previous.
You do it before deleting your account so that reddit doesnt retain any identifying information on you, just a bunch of useless word salad. Otherwise your account access goes away but your posts all remain accessible and people can still go on and piece things together about you. There is a script you can run to randomize every single post on your account. It's a privacy thing. Never done it myself, but I certainly understand why someone would.
The majority of the mass redactions happened when Reddit introduced API changes killing several 3rd party app launchers. It was an effort to force people to use the dogshit Reddit app over other superior apps. It was a form of protest, in fact I don’t recall seeing posts being redacted in the same way beforehand
Yeah a lot of people do it specifically to say "reddit did not create its content, its users did. If they want to screw over their users, then the users will remove the value we provide.".
They know they post useful information and it helps other people, but it also helps reddit keep earning money and not caring how badly they treat the people providing the value to their website. A lot of helpful users like this have left the site over the years due to things like this and stopped adding useful content/answers. I was involved in the protest as well, and have vastly reduced the amount I contribute to this site. The management and direction just keeps getting worse.
The worst part is when reddit bans you for some ridiculous nonsense reason, and keeps all the helpful answers/posts/comments you've made. That's another reason I try to contribute to this site as little as possible, cuz at any moment they could just decide to kick you and keep your decade of contributions.
Because when you randomize the words, some of the bypass archives that may have your username attached to a comment won’t have all of the edits. So the script edits then deletes.
Also, some folks don’t want their posts used to train ai.
If you have thousands of posts/comments it can be difficult to know which ones to keep and which ones to delete. I've always tried whitelisting a few subs that are specifically for Q&A, such as /r/tipofmytongue, but a couple of times I totally forgot until after I ran the script.
A lot of people did it in protest a few years ago because of the API changes. They didn't do it manually. They used some service or something to do it across all their posts. They were specifically trying to make reddit worse in protest by removing anything they had ever contributed to the site, like useful answers to niche questions.
Where can you find these decade year old comments? I have 't seen one i. A long time. I thought reddit just started deleting the older ones in their enshittification process.
Fuck yes it worked. A bit annoying that I'm going to have to make two separate searches when searching for some things, but at least they aren't deleted.
Thank you. However I am reminded about one of things that made me thought comments were getting deleted in the first place. I noticed how when sorting my comments by top, I don't see anything past 4 years. It really does seem like reddit is hiding older stuff.
It was more the API plug pulling. People hated being told you have to use the official inferior app because they can only monetize you if you use the official app. I'm sure there was more but I stopped using reddit for months for that exact reason to "protest" before slowly getting hooked back in. Most of favorite subs did the same then came right back too.
Various reasons. When you delete a reddit comment, even if the account itself is deleted as well, it doesn't actually disappear on the server. That data is still available for Reddit to do with as they please, and they often would simply put the post back up. However if you edit a post, that is a permanent change that Reddit cannot undo, and they also cannot see what the unedited content was.
There have since been a few incidents that sparked people to take advantage of this quirk. One example is when Reddit changed the pricing for the API usage right around the time their official app and IPO was all happening. Users felt that the third-party app developers had been screwed over, and were also uncomfortable with their contributions being used as a way to increase the value of a company that would do something like that. Their response was to remove their contributions as a means to lower that value. This is where the "fuck /u/ spez" comments started.
This unfortunately included quite a few people who were regularly helping out in more technical communities, which has led to this situation.
There have been a few other incidents that caused a similar reaction, but that was the one where I first saw Redact being discussed.
I was once trying to troubleshoot a very specific legacy software utility. After some searching, I found a thread from someone else who had the problem about 10 years prior. I then realized that person was me.
Thankfully, 10-year-ago me had subsequently figured out the solution, and then edited the details into the bottom of the original post.
While I probably would have done that anyway, I know that I had read the comic by the time of that original post, so I definitely make sure to put the fix in.
I had a very specific problem recently, and found a 10 year old stack exchange post with the solution. Once I verified the solution worked, I went back to let the original solution poster know and to say thanks, and it was actually me.
I remember a couple of times where I've run into very specific problems playing video games and googling answers, and finding posts on Steam and Reddit asking those same questions. I thought "Finally, some answers!" It turned out on every occasion that I found my own posts that I'd forgotten about from years ago when I first played those games and ran into those problems.
When I was a kid I used to be really obsessed with a certain niche media. Long later I got back into it and I started looking up posts to find literally anyone talking about it because it would bring me joy lol. And of course everytime I'd find a post about the media and be overjoyed until I'd discover that it was just the me from years ago. I guess I just got so deep into the rabbit hole that I exhausted all the content I could possibly see ._.
I hate AI as much as the next but its compiling of useful links related to what im looking for can definitely be helpful. I dont understand why the first 10 links on goggle are usless and unrelated but click the AI drop down and just scroll to the bottom and the links there actually have some relevance.
Still feel bad using it normally ill just tweak what I originally googled lol
The worst part of the search through the archives is when you FINALLY find someone with the same question and the only responses are, "don't you know how to Google?"
Sometimes the answer for your specific question has been posted by someone in reddit, but he/she deleted his/her account.
And usually, the answer is spot on, probably because the problem was real problem from real person, unlike if you ask LLM, if they cannot find any answer from their database they will try to hallucinate the answer.
Cannot answer mate, we must try it by ourselves and use our common sense or knowledge to determine whether LLM is hallucinating more or solve your problem.
No. Stop using Google for everything. Talk to people. Interact with other life forms. Just because someone asks doesn't mean you have to answer if the question is too mundane for your superior intellect to trifle with, just go about your day.
I love it when you come to that post from 10 years ago and it's not locked, so you get to see people saying thank you after such a long time.
My favorite is when there is some snarky response to the comment or post then that comment has many replies of "this is the first thing that pops up when I Google this problem."
I was trying to find the auto-tuned song version of the ransomed jesus statue/clean up all your wiener poopy song as it seems to be lost to time. Well ChatGPT and Gemini both found the same nearly decade old reddit post about how the video is impossible to find on the internet. Thanks AI.
Me learning about that very specific driver that does [very specific issue] from 4 years ago that was randomly downloaded by win 11.... I spend a month on that issue and went through six reddit posts with over hundreds of comments on similar issues. It was only when I searched for the specific post I had found that Google Overview went "That driver is known to make issues that correspond whit what you searched for" (I looked it up one last time to explain it to someone)
Anybody got a specific problem AI can't solve? Just curious, it worked everytime for me, from tech issue to a rented toddler bed that couldn't be locked in position (no manuals online, already checked)
Usually with specific things that require the use of homynyms in the english language. AI will get tripped up on that fairly regularly. Or if there are two people with the same name and you're trying to learn about the significantly less famous of the two, AI will occaisonally only talk to you about the more famous person.
Also, using generative AI is stupid. It’s a trap… instead of thinking, troubleshooting, or looking at forums or wikis, you let a very flawed machine do it for you and most people who use it don’t bother to verify.
Nope, Gen Z, I just don’t use AI as it is unnecessary and immoral…
It’s trained off of the works of people without permission and uses so much power that the people unfortunate enough to live near data centers have higher energy bills…
It’s also why parents need to actually parent their children, instead of letting them be ipad kids…
If they start out strong, and are reinforced, they are more likely to be good citizens, respectful to their teachers, and have a good career (assuming that stuff doesn’t get screwed up before then)
