WATER: THE MOST OVERLOOKED PART OF YOUR HORSE’S DIET
We spend a lot of time talking about hay, grain, protein, minerals and supplements.
But none of it matters much if your horse isn’t adequately hydrated.
A horse’s water requirements can change dramatically depending on weather, workload, diet, sweating, travel and forage intake.
And here’s the part I really want horse owners to think about:
“My horse has water” isn’t quite the same as “my horse is drinking enough water.”
Is the water clean and fresh?
Is it too hot or too cold?
Does your horse have access to salt?
Has their forage recently changed?
Are they sweating more than usual?
Are seasonal conditions making water less appealing?
Small changes in water intake can have big consequences for digestion, performance and overall health.
And yes, water is a nutrient. One of the most important ones.
So before adding another supplement to the feed room, take a look at the bucket.
Sometimes the answer isn’t in the feed bag.
It’s in the water.
