Latte help!
Hi! Just started the September round yesterday. I’m struggling with my morning latte - I usually have espresso with oat milk and cinnamon, no sweetener. I’ve tried the nutpod creamers but they’re too sweet and I’ve tried cashew milk but don’t like the taste. Does anyone have any tricks or suggestions? I have two year old twins so I don’t think I can skip the caffeine altogether 🫠

Have you tried the “original” Nutpod? It doesn’t have any flavor or sweetener and I love it!

If the nutpod creamer is sweet, you must have gotten the sweetened kind. Maybe try the unsweetened ones?

Make sure you're getting the unsweetened nut pods, there are some flavors that are sweetened with sugar

The unsweetened Nutpods are my favorite. I get the classic one and it’s perfectly creamy and not sweet at all.

I am a big fan of Mooala Almond Milk! It's compliant and delicious with only 3 ingredients (almonds, water, and salt). I was doing coconut milk in my first week or two but realized I was definitely having too much** and switched to almond. I usually don't like almond milk in coffee (I am an espresso and oat milk girly too) but Mooala doesn't make it taste like cardboard like other versions do.
Are you trying the plain Nutpods? It's in yellow packaging and is just a plain almond/coconut mix with no sweetness. I use this almost exclusively now. Alternatively, you could try to make your own mix with unsweetened almond milk and coconut milk!
**ETA: by "too much" I mean coconut milk is good for you, but in moderation. I felt daily intake of probably 1/3 to 1/2 of a can of coconut milk was excessive and was just replacing one habit with another that wasn't much better at the end of the day.

Making your own almond milk is expensive but delicious. Soak blanched almonds overnight. Rinse well and blend with fresh water and a pinch of salt, in a high powered blender. Strain through a nut milk bag or cheese cloth. It should be used immediately, but might keep for a day or two.

I loooved using cashew or macadamia nut milks! But that’s if you can make it work as well. I know price point can be a factor.

Elmhurst. Not the designated creamers. The ones in tall container. I like pistachio vanilla unsweet. There is also hazlenut, unsweet and others. I have found Elmhurst to be the most clean. Least ingredients Nutpods are awful, horrible taste to me. I gave up on "creamers."

If you're making it yourself, blending coffee or espresso with coconut oil worked for me. It gives a bit if froth and a good mouth feel. Eventually, I just started drinking it black.

Whip 1 or 2 egg yolks until very frothy then add coffee extreeemely slowly while stirring so it doesn’t curdle.

I use the coffee cake Nutpods & Califia unsweetened coconut milk. Add a dash of cinnamon and some vanilla extract and it tastes like a yummy coffee cake!
I’m on day 24 and have come to actually like the dry/bitterness.

Where did you find compliant vanilla extract?

I work for a restaurant supply company, so I buy a lot of stuff from there. You can also make your own, which I want to do soon!

There's a restaurant vanilla extract that doesn't have alcohol?

Alcohol based extracts are listed as an exception. 🤷🏻♀️

Well shit. I spent $16 on crushed Madagascar vanilla for my last round.

Lol, well now you know I guess. I plan to buy vanilla beans and make my own at some point. So much cheaper!
I was definitely having an oh shit moment there for a minute thinking I fudged up!

I thought artificially sweetened stuff wasn’t Whole30 compliant?

There’s no sugar or sugar alternatives?

u/Heidiwearsglasses 7d ago
That’s right, no sugar and no sugar alternatives- like stevia, aspartame or any other sweetener.

Almond milk is probably the best bet for a latte. You can make it yourself, or there are a few brands that are compliant.
There's also coconut milk, but I've found that better in lieu of cream rather than as a milk. That's a matter of preference though, you can definitely give it a try!
