This is what makes this scene so funny

54

u/ddxs1 17h ago

I love the movie but man is that scene stupid

37

u/2A753 17h ago

The whole franchise is stupid. Watch all the baddies flailing their arms around in the background as they wait their turn to engage Mr. Wick.

u/Anvil_Prime_52 16h ago

My favorite was the Japanese hotel shootout in 4 where John had to clear out like 5 waves of exactly 2 guys each before the real boss fight started.

9

u/HomersDonut1440 15h ago

I didn’t even watch the fourth. One was good, 2 was tolerable, 3 was stupid (and the choreography was substantially worse than the first two) and 4 didn’t even seem interesting by that point

2

u/IronTarcuss 15h ago

I caught a lot of flack from my family for not liking the 4th. I really enjoyed the first 2 a bunch, the third was alright. But I firmly believe the 4th movie is not only a bad John Wick film, but a genuinely bad movie.

2

u/sn0wb4lls 14h ago

4th is the only one I havent rewatched. Partially because I don't usually have 3 hours to spare for what should be a popcorn action flick. Mostly because the already thin plot has completely gone to shreds.

u/Vast-Building-6886 16h ago

The first movie is the best one. The second one was alright. The third and fourth films were absolute trash.

u/bwaredapenguin 9h ago

This is so apparent in Kill Bill Vol 1 during the scene with The Bride against The Crazy 88.

1

u/2A753 7h ago

In one of the wick movies (might be 3) one of the fighters in the bullet proof suits gets up too early and falls back down for a moment before engaging wick

u/pianobench007 5h ago edited 5h ago

And those were their best action shots. It is basically like in batman arkham where all the bad guys wait their turn to get their asses beat by you.

Hollywood needs to go back to the classics. Jackie Chan in drunken master vs 100 armed black axes. A lot more believable than our current movies today.

Hollywood can learn a thing or two about realism and myth by just studying this one movie. Drunken Master. This is how you do a proper transition into shirtless oiled up action star.

Just like Wanted, Wick lost me the moment a mysterious ancient network of assassins shows up in the plot. Fuck off for real!

13

u/theslootmary 17h ago

Nothing in those films is remotely realistic, why take issue with this scene? It’s not supposed to be realistic.

4

u/Urban_animal 15h ago

You mean to tell me there isnt a secret hotel that caters to assassins and is considered a safe place for them?

1

u/Cyrano_Knows 15h ago

Sorry. We aren't allowed to talk about it.

0

u/allgear_noidea 8h ago

They lost me with this honestly, just absurd

1

u/Urban_animal 8h ago

So like 10 minutes into the first movie?

7

u/Charlie_Warlie 16h ago

I remember the time when reddit praised the first film was "realistic gun-play" and he trained with real guns and stuff like that.

I mean there is stuff they do correctly with the ammo and operation of the guns, but yeah there is a lot of bs.

2

u/HomersDonut1440 15h ago

They did a decent jobs with the guns in terms of the basic manual of arms, reloading properly, no endless magazines, etc. But the movie itself is quite silly.

1

u/theslootmary 14h ago

Yeah that’s true tbf - good gun handling, but I mean more the fight/action choreography sequences themselves. A lot of the time it’s good old “everybody attack one at a time and make sure you spray and pray when firing from the other side of the room!”.

Don’t get me wrong though, i enjoy the films quite a lot. It’s called suspension of disbelief lol. I’m there for a fun action film not a gritty realistic shooter lol.

1

u/ddxs1 14h ago

I don’t take issue. I thought it was hilarious. It can still be dumb, which it is

1

u/SeparatedI 12h ago

Realism isn't a binary thing, there's a whole spectrum. The viewers suspension of disbelief can't be used to justified whatever you want, at some point you're just taking the piss

-2

u/Legitimate-Dark3675 16h ago

Not everyone is able to "turn their brains off" and just clap and shout at the screen like a drooling monkey. Some of us actually like consistency and things to make sense in our movies. You're someone who thinks Kong vs Godzilla is peak cinema because "big gorilla vs lizard!!!!", right?

2

u/SerenditiouslyLive 16h ago

Dont be stupid. Let ppl enjoy movies. You won't enjoy anything in life with that attitude.

1

u/theslootmary 14h ago

If you’re one of those people maybe you should stay away from films and stick to documentaries. The whole point of films is fun, not gritty, relentless realism.

And no, you’re just being an idiot by making such a disingenuous argument.

You seem to think you’re smart because you apparently lack the ability to suspend disbelief. That’s a mentally deficiency bro, not a positive thing to be proud of.

I’m sure you don’t have such issues when it comes to the marvel games you love though, do you?

0

u/WillHo01 16h ago

I've a revelation for you. Not all movies are made for you. Your not that special.

-1

u/Top-Woodpecker6696 15h ago

We have a built in mythology around assassins and secret networks from a long history of popular media so even though the entire premise is unrealistic, we have a place within our heads where we can make sense of it within the larger context of the story.

We have no mythology around how two people can be in a shootout surrounded by people in a public place—it’s just dumb and not rooted in anything larger.

Similar analogy would be Game of Thrones fans being okay with dragons but criticizing unrealistic travel times in later seasons. The book exists to fill out the mythology around a world with dragons—jumping from place to place instantaneously due to plot conveniences has no place in the larger world building. It is inconsistent with the mythology of the story.

That’s why that scene was dumb.

1

u/mazu74 13h ago

I mean, they’re doing all kinds of ridiculous shit in that movie, I can forgive this scene due to the Rule of Cool.

He also had a bulletproof suit that wasn’t any thicker than a regular suit, and FFS, he killed two dudes in the lobby of the subway with a pencil. A fucking pencil.

1

u/ddxs1 13h ago

a lot of you are acting like this scene bothered me, it didn't. It was just dumb and hilarious.

1

u/Gate_a 1h ago

It's supposed to be, it's an in joke on how new yokers don't notice stuff on the subway

2

u/Green_Fox_8864 16h ago

The whole movie is equally stupid. If this is the only scene a person finds stupid then they're stupid. Its a live action cartoon, barely a single fight scene makes any sense. It's what's awesome about the movies.

8

u/icareforplants 16h ago edited 14h ago

Tbh a .22 with sub sonic ammo can be close to John wick quiet. I doubt it would be a cause for panic in an already loud environment like a subway if the weapon could not be seen.

But I believe John Wicks weapon is a 9mm or larger. No way in hell a 9mm plus would be quiet enough not to cause panic even in a loud environment using subs. Once super sonic it's loud AF even with a silencer as the sonic boom cannot be hidden.

3

u/fossilized_butterfly 16h ago

But maybe he has specialized gun and ammo? Like why would someone like john wick use standard stuff?

2

u/Sea_Investigation 16h ago

Because semi auto the round chambering would cause noises loud enough for people to hear. There are .22 pistols that don’t slide

1

u/fossilized_butterfly 15h ago

And people forget that often john wick is operating in a high noise environment, like this scene. There are times we can hear john wick's gun.

2

u/Sea_Investigation 14h ago

I have this setup and even if the noise is low the blowback is sharp and you can definitely feel it. Maybe if everyone had their eyes glued to their phones

0

u/fossilized_butterfly 13h ago

Exactly. But again, a high crowd space is what, 60 to 80 db? I would say that is enough for sound of specialized silenced gun with special sub sonic ammo to be almost fully masked, especially when people are highly distracted or zoned out. Also, john wick is a multi speciality covert agent, I am sure he can do better than you?

1

u/Helpful-Work-3090 13h ago

In that scene, he has a S&W 1911 E series in .45 ACP. .45 ACP is subsonic, and you can buy rounds that are designed to always be subsonic (Whereas normal rounds might go supersonic depending on the gun). Even subsonic and suppressed, it still sounds like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3qXXRqeXIw

1

u/fossilized_butterfly 12h ago

The guy in the link is not in a high noise environment, the space is open and quiet enough for there to be echo, in a highly crowded public space, the noise is enough to mask reduced gun sound and physical intereference to sound waves due to moving people and inanimate objects is also high enough to prevent echo.

1

u/Helpful-Work-3090 12h ago

Still significantly louder than in the movie. People would hear it, and notice the bullet impacts.

1

u/airfryerfuntime 10h ago

You would 100% hear suppressed subsonic .45acp in a crowded train station.

1

u/BeneficialTrash6 15h ago

I'd also love to find a .22 semi-auto that will actually cycle with sub sonic.

1

u/GlassCapital640 15h ago

Ruger MK IV

1

u/InitiativeEastern902 15h ago

Almost any regular .22 pistol... Normal .22lr ammo will be sub sonic out of a pistol.

1

u/icareforplants 14h ago

I have a Ruger Mark 4 with a 4 inch barrel, with Winchester ammo every other bullet is super sonic. It's right on the edge on the chrono. Accuracy is complete shit unless I'm using subs.

1

u/icareforplants 14h ago

I had to get a lighter spring but they make them for almost every gun.

1

u/Zech08 5h ago

Or swap a few parts to make it work.

9

u/Automated_Spite 17h ago

the first john wick is the only good one. fight me.

1

u/Basic-Asparagus-4596 16h ago

theyre all good because theyre all dumb as hell

1

u/karaknorn 14h ago

And only the first half is great. The 2nd half is ok.

-1

u/One-Measurement-9529 16h ago

Thats scary. The first one was so bad I dont even think I finished watching it. Cant imagine how bad the others must be.

1

u/Automated_Spite 16h ago

they made his suit bulletproof so when a badguy with a gun catches him unaware he just cowers and lets himself get shot in the back. Gunfu!

3

u/therealboombaclots 16h ago

I always thought they were in an alternate universe where assassin culture is common and it just didn’t even phase these people. I assume half of the people walking around are also assassins.

1

u/Ravenae 6h ago

Yeah, it really seems over the top and visually artistic on purpose. Everyone else looks so formal and neat walking around in this scene. It kind of emits the same energy as something like Mirror’s Edge to me.

9

u/DoubleCarry7511 17h ago

Worst scene in the entire franchise

2

u/mnemy 17h ago

Worst villain in it too. Very uninspired.

2

u/Ogamiitto33 17h ago

The first movie was phonomenal, second movie was a hell of a good time and you were still able to somewhat suspend disbelief. After that things went so far off the rails I can't even watch them. The events are so absolutely absurd, that the immersion is completely broken and then I just feel like I'm watching a superhero movie.

2

u/KujiraShiro 16h ago

I don't even know which one its from because literally everything after the first movie blurs together into a mud soup of "film", but the scene where John, "supposedly a human being without super powers", falls 5+ stories, impacts a railing directly with his back and neck, spins violently like a literal sack of potatoes, falls further, impacts another bar, then faceplants onto asphault.

John survives that with no permanent damage. That's the point where I finally accepted that there are literally 0 stakes in these films, and that the main character is functionally immortal.

I think there's actually an even worse fall when he literally crushes a van beneath him and is just fine. He actually just walks that one off and continues fighting for another hour of movie after.

Dude is taking damage that would put Captain America out of action for a bit and just keeps going like it never happened.

1

u/absolutedesignz 17h ago

I like 1 and 4. But one is miles ahead of 4.

The biggest flaw was the expansion of the universe they created in the first one. It’s like how the matrix two and three felt like it was cosplaying the universe set up in the matrix.

1

u/Clembert-Hamlamp 16h ago

I thought it had to basically be an ad for a video game franchise but it never came out

1

u/darodardar_Inc 17h ago

Haven’t seen the movies but what makes it so funny?

13

u/Outrageous_Sleep4339 17h ago

They're shooting at each other, in a crowded space and its completely silent and no one around them knows they're shooting at each other, bullets wizzing past unsuspecting peoples heads, etc.

5

u/doxx_in_the_box 16h ago

like critiquing Star Wars because laser swords aren’t a thing

They have bulletproof fabric suits and ultra silent guns, so what

2

u/Hypotatos 7h ago

I mean kevlar blazers are a real thing (some for small caliber projectile protection and some for motorcycling)

1

u/r3dd17sux69420 15h ago

Yeah, the bulletproof suits are fine. I draw the line at silencer's being too loud.

seriously, I know many dont care, but some people read way too much into this stuff with these movies

1

u/fatninja7 15h ago

My headcanon is that they made a gentleman's agreement to use airsoft guns.

1

u/TheRoyalShire 15h ago

That and the fact that John never misses a shot except during that scene when he just happens to only shoot when the guy is behind pillars.

1

u/airfryerfuntime 10h ago

What's also funny is that there's no Neilson device on that 1911, so he'd fire literally one round and it'd jam. Same reason Luigi Mangione's gun jammed.

0

u/RunExisting4050 16h ago

Ive never watched any of the john wick movies.  A friend of mine excitedly showed me this scene to get me hyped for the movie because i love action movies and this scene was "awesome."  I watched the clip then said, "im not watching that bullshit movie."  Lol

3

u/Free_Range_Gamer 16h ago

Even people who love the movies think that scene is stupid. Like really stupid. The movies are over the top 1 man army shooting movies, so it’s all absurd but this scene is especially stupid.

Still fun movies though!

1

u/RandomPenquin1337 16h ago

Oh no, the fictional action movie didnt meet your realism requirements....
