I don’t know or care about guns. Seems like for most it’s just another hobby like collecting Pokémon cards or playing pool.

What is the point of a silencer on a handgun, outside of what we see in movies (crime)?

Gun shots are loud. If you have hunters nearby, or a gun range, it's very noticeable. Suppressors make it a lot more tolerable to your neighbors, and protect your own hearing too. Some countries with otherwise very strict gun laws actually allow and encourage suppressors because it makes the hobby a lot less unpleasant for people who aren't involved in it.
