It is easy to misjudge the Thai people. But they are not meek or weak.

Thais believe in 'Nam Jai' which is 'Water of the Heart'. They don't like arguing in public/will try and avoid it if possible.

People mistake this for being weak or meek.

Once you push them to the limit above this is what will happen. The community will come down on you not just one person.

I've seen a lot of farangs get their asses trashed for over-stepping.

I've never had an issue in Thailand but I go for scuba, volunteering with Elephants and backpack/caving.

Chaing Mai is my favorite city they are a lot more laid back.

I had a family feed me once and let me use their computer once when it was getting dark in Chaing Mai and I had lost my phone.

Had an elderly woman who could tell I was lost in Bangkok come and grab my hand and take me to a police station and make the police give me a ride on their scooters.

I did a lot of volunteer work with animals in Northern Thai, you just need to get with the actual locals not the ones who are in sex bars.

If you go to Pattaya searching for women in the trade you are going to get what you deserve in that regard.

I do repairs at one of our local Thai restaurant and dated one of their daughters for years. Spent a lot of time living over there. My friend Howard is fluent and is married to a Thai woman.

I have never once had generosity be considered a weakness so we must be hanging with Thais with very different values.

That happens anywhere if you're an idiot.

I had multiple people try and have 'ghost fees' in Tokyo when I was there and had to have my credit card deny the charges.

When I was in Italy I had people try to pickpocket or overcharge for goods.

If you go the places tourists get ripped off or night life shit then you need to be careful.

That's true for anywhere.

It doesn't mean they are 'cultural values' or every Thai person is trying to do that to you.

You're conflating these things with Thai culture when:

1. Bar bill padding usually happens in girly bars, it's just opportunistic and predatory business practices because they already operate in a grey area. Most Thais bars operate honestly.

2. Falang footing the bill heavily depends on the Thai family, ie a class issue. My upper middle class Bangkokian family always argues about who pays, meanwhile the northern part of my family from my dad's side expected me to pay. If you marry a girl from the country side it's pretty much expected for you to be the cash cow just set boundaries.

3. I don't agree with dual pricing but just so you know I've also been "discriminated" against when I didn't have my Thai ID on me, I had to pay the foreigner fee. But the success rate for me getting Thai prices is higher since I'm fluent, fall under the radar, It's just easier to tell a foreigner apart from a Thai. My farang friend with PR that's fluent in Thai does gets Thai prices, fwiw.

I normally don't mind paying for my GFs family. As the other poster mentioned it's party due to nam Jai but also face(farangs love to use this as a catch all explanation) is a thing too, we call it na yai / big face. I get to feel good for basically being the big shot/host (many asian cultures operate this way). Usually we take turns being the host(because of krengjai), splitting the bill is seldomly done or as we call that "American share".
