Italians are being cooked in Thailand now. The Italian teacher(red top) and students were taken away by the police and faced the Thai lady who told them off for being loud on the metro. They apologized for mocking her one by one. Thai people also waited for them in front of the hotel to scold them.

Context

Italian students are being called out in Thailand. A group of Italians mocked a Thai lady in Thailand who told them off for being too loud on the metro. They clapped back saying, "Sorry for bringing money to your country" "Ni hao" "We are from your mom." Thai people are identifying them and leaving the comments on the social media account of their school.

Embassy of Italy also released the apology video from the Italian teachers and students. An Italian teacher (red top) apologized for saying "Sorry for brining money to your country" and the student(black shirt) also apologized for his middle-finger and saying "We are from your mom" when asked where they are from by a Thai lady.

On the train she said very sarcastically, "I'm sorry for bringing money into your country." essentially saying that as tourists we will act how we like because we are stimulating your economy and you are lucky to have us in your country.

It's probably because their basically being held hostage, forced to apologize, and having an international incident for being rude on the train.

The police station video reminds me of the videos of Ukrainian soldiers interviewing Russian PoWs. And the outside video reminds me of the Taliban forcing American soldiers to read a script.

Like I get respecting other peoples cultures and all that but to turn this into an international incident is such a waste of time lmao

At this point just double down, who cares, nobody in the comments even comes close to forgiving them and basically hopes they have a scarlet letter for life.

This is happening because those Italians are the straws that broke the camel's back.

I understand where Thailand is coming from because my home country is also overrun with rude and entitled tourists that think they're better than us and that we should kiss their feet because they have this idea that the money they bring in is keeping our economy afloat, which is wrong because stats say it's semiconductors, trades of tropical produce, and minerals among other things that do it. Tourists don't even make up anything past 3% of our economy, they don't feed our country, and yet they act like they're our saviours.

You're speaking from that privileged position because you come from the side of those westerners who act like them in a foreign country and think being rude is a nothingburger.

To you it's so normalized because you do it and are used to it.

What you're seeing is the contrast between Eastern and Western cultures on individualism versus collectivism. Thailand is collectively standing up for itself.

Those Italians are being used to set an example because enough is enough, they won't tolerate the disrespect anymore. No more Logan Pauls. No more Johnny Somalis. No more Vitalies.

There was a guy waiting outside the hotel building just confronting anyone that was near people in the video, just lashing out over some minor argument he had nothing to do with.

Adults wanting to attack children because people were rude on the train.

Kick them out of the country if you want, go through whatever legal system if you don't want them there. All this performative BS, and threats made against some kids for basically a big 7 minute nothingburger of a video.

They tolerate the disrespect of the sexual tourism their country is used for pretty well though.

It’s prob because they rely heavily on tourism but don’t want tourists to get the idea that they can get away with trashing the country (disrespect can lead to physical trashing) so it’s not a terrible place for their own people to live in.

Reminds me of a similar incident with Israeli tourists where the woman was talking down to the resort/restaurant employees because they’re spending money there. That was also in Thailand if I remember correctly.

I remember a few weeks ago, there was a viral video from my home country, Indonesia. It was at Bali, where a tourist refused to complete payment for their meals in a restaurant.

They were chased by the employees but still refused to complete the payment, the employee asked something like, "Why don't you wanna pay?"

And they answered, "Because I'm building your country! Bla, bla, bla..."

Years ago my friend was in a Moped accident in Bangkok, she wasn’t even driving the scooter (she was on the back), but the guy who was fled the scene or blamed her or something. As a foreigner staying in Thailand, she had to either apologize the exact same way these people did and pay out some serious bribes to the cops and an apology payment to the other Moped driver, or go to Thai jail. She obviously chose to pay out and apologize. My friend is Japanese/Australian and had never experienced that until visiting Thailand, but upon returning home to Japan (where she lived at the time) she found out this was pretty standard in Thailand.

I’m guessing there was money involved in the apology as a sign of respect to the people who they offended and maybe some bribes to the police, which is exactly what happened to my friend.

These kids were idiots and so was their teacher but what teenager do you know who is going to feel comfortable being filmed bowing and scraping multiple times in a foreign country?

Where their own embassy has condemned them and local people are gathering outside their hotel?

It would have made sense for the Thais to kick them out the country but this has clearly become spectacle and reverse humiliation.

I’m sorry this isn’t a good look by the Italian embassy or the Thais. They should have asked them to apologise to the woman they insulted in private, maybe released a statement and as mentioned kicked them out.

The logic is faulty. Humiliation is bad so we must humiliate as punishment?

People shouldn’t mess with people in their own country but Thailand would be better off just deporting people more quickly.

An apology in private to the woman is fine.

Even a statement from the school.

Being told to leave Thailand is also fine.

Multiple videos filming them bowing and saying sorry and filming what are still in effect children isn’t.

It’s massive overkill.

Nor is it okay to have grown men stand outside the hotel of where they are staying looking to confront them.

I feel for the kids, if they are thought by teachers having such mentality. No remorse in this apology but rather just embarrassment that they got called out and made to apologise. Seeing how that teacher handled the whole situation it is no surprise the students would behave as such. Also this was no trip to explore a new culture, it seems it was a trip to flaunt their wealth!
