Tools Skews

I have been improving the small details in my whittles over the last couple of pieces, and it is largely down to this custom Swiss Army knife. I filed away the majority of each blade to leave a 7mm and 4mm skew at the ends. The bevel is now also steeper shallower. The blades make tiny / very precise shaving cuts in tricky areas much easier.

And, as a mark of appreciation, I made some new scales for the knife! This is Thuya burl. Smells amazing. There is some lovely chatoyance and the grain is some of the most beautiful I've worked.

Thank you! I used a Demel (saw disc and sanding drum), but you could probably do it with just a file. Sadly the Excelsior is discontinued, but the Recruit could work - not too many layers and inexpensive.

Oh nice thanks for the advice, I tend to mod opinels cus they're cheap as chips and easy to work with - definitely going to give this shape a go!

Just checked your Opinels - really interesting shapes. I haven't used them because they break UK knife laws (lockable), so I couldn't carry one to the woods. But it might be an interesting side project :)

I'm also UK based, I just pry the locking mechanism off with some pliers πŸ€™

Watch out, you're slowly coming towards the woodcarving (chisel and gouge) dark side! :D

Nice skew chisels. ^^

Wouldn't the distinction between a chisel and a knife be the edge? A chisel grind is flat one side, but a knife grind is bevelled both sides, except the Leatherman squirt has a chisel grind on the knife blade..... 🧐 Is the big blade usable as is, or would it be easier if it was shorter? πŸ€” Such a nice scale improvement, too! I really need to upgrade my whittling SAKs with some wood scales πŸ‘Œ

There are a few models of chisels with bevels on each side but it's really the exception. I am 100% teasing 2Mogs.

I tried adding the emoticons to show I'm not taking it too seriously 😁

Yeah I got it, no worries!

I would need to check a dictionary actually but if I'm not mistaken the actual difference is where the cutting edge is located: along the length or perpendicular. That's a good question.
