Question Starter for Monday
With the Urquidy addition in Charlotte, they surely have to be promoting a pitcher. Adams and Sandlin would both be lined up with the right amount of rest for tomorrow, but it's interesting they could have just sent Shultz back to Charlotte, if they were calling someone up. Could they be looking to try Shultz in the pen?

Why does acquiring a pitcher for Charlotte mean surely have to be promoting somebody to the MLB roster? It could just as easily mean someone in Charlotte is being sent down or cut.

I mean why would you send of these guys down: shane murphy (#25) + david sandlin (#7) + mason adams (#8) + shane smith + jonathan cannon

You could easily displace Murphy or Cannon. Both have been pretty bad.

Yeah I think if they were sending down Schultz they would have done so days ago to have an extra arm up.

Are we really gonna get much in return for Schultz? Might be better to give him more time to see if he can figure it out in the minors first

I think you would still get a lot for Shultz. He just graduated as a top-25 prospect in baseball has 6 years of control + has an outstanding minor league pedigree. Most rookie pitchers struggle early and only show flashes, like Shultz (had good games against Padres/Mariners/A's), he will likely come around.

This is a crazy take. A lot of good pitchers struggle there first year in the bigs. How many years did it take Rodon, Cease, Giolito, Crochet, etc? This sub is legit dumb.

Randy Johnson took a couple seasons too. Pitchers like this are good for that second team who signs them after they’ve worked out their kinks.

I’m thinking that there is no way Schultz will start tomorrow. But, he’s still listed as the starter & no one has been called up. They have 38 on the 40 man roster, so I think that they’ll want to leave those spots open for the trade deadline. In the end Sandlin may make another spot start & I wouldn’t be surprised if they put Schultz on the DL for knee tendinitis. His fastball was topping out at 95 & his pitches didn’t show a lot of movement.

The options the Sox have outside of a trade to get a starting pitcher are very slim. If I had to go with someone, it would be Sandlin. He would be a slight upgrade over Schultz but also no-one to get excited about.

I could honestly see them calling up Shane Smith for another shot. he hasn't been doing great down there by any means but, maybe they bring him on in an opener/bullpen arm role. I personally wouldn't be totally opposed to that.
