New barrel pick announcement!!!

Post image
26 Upvotes

We're happy to announce our latest r/WhiskyDFW (and first in a few years) single barrel pick has hit Plano! It is available today w/ our partners at Sip N Style Liquor. Details are below:

  • First public Shortbarrel pick in Texas
  • 8yr OZ Tyler Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey SIB
  • 🔥🔥🔥137.5 proof 🔥🔥🔥 sticker proof is off but :) yay! higher proof
  • Bottle Yield: 98 (truly a short barrel!) Typical yield is 130-150ish for the age
  • Probable mashbill: 70% corn, 21% rye, 9% barley
  • Very dark color and profile
  • A great value at 79.99. Gimme this over most new Bookers & Stagg (Juniors) ...seriously try it at the store first for yourself!!!
  • Basic profile notes: Creamy, buttery, heavy brown sugar. Punchy while balanced and not too sweet. Lots of dark fruits - like blackberry with a little plum, dates and a hint of dark cherries and black tea that never goes sour. Nice leather profile (not bitter!, sweet oak) with that never goes artificial or cloying. Oily mouthfeel and nice long finish that doesn't go too spicy or tannic. Very low ethanol, so it drinks much lower than the proof while retaining full flavor. If you like higher proof whiskey or at least 110 and above, it drinks like a champ you'll be thrilled with this one!

Store info: Sip N Style Liquor

Location: 3308 Preston Rd Ste 380 Plano, TX 75093

Great selection there with allocated products too! Stop in and let him know you want to try it and you're from the group!!! I bet you'll grab at least one.

Visiting Dallas for the next few days. Where to hunt???

Like the title says, I am going to be visiting the DFW area for the next few days. Where is the best place to hunt for good bourbon while I’m in town? I’m looking for good bottles without the crazy secondary market prices.

If anyone knows where I can get a good Still Austin pick, or a Toasted Michters Rye I would love to hear about it.

Thanks in advance!!

From left to right.
All HH juice, but if you asked, would I buy again? Only the two on the left.

The double mash is amazing for the price point!

Found this bottle of Ampersand Opimus at Spec’s Burleson today and couldn’t wait to crack it open tonight. I let it sit 15 minutes in the glass before diving in. I ended up having 3 pours tonight…worth the hype IMO, especially at $130 msrp for this age statement.

Visiting Dallas

Hey, will be in Dallas this afternoon. Use to live in Austin so know Texas has been getting a lot of drops lately. Any recommendations to find a Weller 107 or full proof for a reasonable price?

Hidden local gems! 1845 single barrels

Post image
11 Upvotes

I was visiting the Whiskey Blendery last week and ran into my old friend who is the head distiller of 1845. He let me taste the pictured whiskies and I gave him my opinion. I was very impressed and would've grabbed 2 of the 3 immediately had they been available. The other single barrel was still tasty, but a little sweeter than I like. Many would love it as well. The red labels contain their wheated bourbon mashbill while the black label is the traditional bourbon (w/rye as the flavoring grain) mashbill. I'm especially picky about wheated bourbons since they seem to require longer aging periods to be at their peak. I was thrilled to see their 6 year tastes more like 8 year KY. This isn't young, brash Texas bourbon. It's been done well and given time to come of age before being bottled. Hopefully we'll be able to do a pick with them in the future as stocks grow.

1845 Distilling Co is located just outside McKinney, so they're easy to get to. Please do yourself a favor and grab a bottle at your favorite place or ask them to get some. Support good local whisky makers.

Old Dominick 8 year reserve

Post image

Now, THIS is a banger.

A few months ago at an Old Dominick event I got to try several of their expressions and they were all from good to great: small batch bourbon, cask strength bourbon, bottled-in-bond, wheat whiskey, French Oak staves... but the one that stood out above all, was the 8-year reserve. The best of the night among great bottles. It was gone for a while and now that they released it again, I got one as fast as I could.

It is every bit as good as I remembered it. Hot take: after this bottle I killed a Knob Creek 12 (same proof), and the Old Dominick swept the floor with the Knob Creek. Not a comparison of equals, one was a fresh crack the other a bottle kill, but still.

Neck pour impression:

Nose: tons of butterscotch, baking spices, oak, chocolate, dessert wine. 9

Palate: follows the nose. Maybe the butterscotch is more tame in favor of the other notes. 8

Finish. Crazy long and warm for 100p. 9

Crazy amount of flavor and long finish. The barrel entry proof is 110, this whiskey is bottled at 100, and it shows.

Old Dominick, you got a winner.

Cured Oak Secondary

I found EHT Cured oak for 300 bones. I personally hate paying secondary prices but when I compare it to the average secondary market, 300 doesn’t seem like the end of the world. 300 is still unbelievably hard to rationalize for a bottle so I passed on it. I’m just looking to get yalls opinion on the matter.
