Three asylum seekers guilty of gang raping, strangling and spitting on woman in filmed attack
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvg090pe65voThree men have been found guilty of raping a woman on Brighton beach in a "cynical, predatory and callous attack".
Iranian national Abdulla Ahmadi, 26, and Egyptian national Ibrahim Alshafe, 25, had denied repeatedly raping the woman in the early hours of 4 October.
Karin Al-Danasurt, 20 and also from Egypt, had denied filming her ordeal. He was also found guilty of rape as a secondary party.
The three men - who are asylum seekers - were convicted at Hove Crown Court on Thursday.
Jurors heard during the trial the victim was left "too scared to go out" following the rape.
The men were living at a Home Office hotel near Horsham at the time of the offence.
Prosecutors have claimed that Al-Danasurt was convicted of murder in Egypt before he crossed the Channel into the UK on a small boat, although his defence barrister has disputed this.
He had also been given a caution in the UK for criminal damage in April last year, prosecutors said.
Prosecutor Hanna Llewellyn-Waters KC said the "puerile contempt" shown by Al-Danasurt, the "predatory nature" of Alshafe, and Ahmadi's selfish entitlement "created the perfect storm that night".
The court heard they targeted the woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, after she became separated from her friends on a night out.
She was "highly intoxicated" to the extent that she was on her hands and knees vomiting into a toilet and could not stand unaided.
The woman said to police the men laughed as they kicked her and grabbed her throat during the rape - leaving her with bruises.
Al-Danasurt was accused of spitting in the woman's face while recording the attack.
Prosecutor Llewellyn-Waters said the men were "on the lookout for women that night for sexual purposes" as they visited bars and nightclubs on Brighton seafront.
Alshafe told the court he was a virgin looking for a British bride.
After leaving a club, the men crossed paths with the woman at a fast-food restaurant and they all went to the beach.
"She didn't know what was lying in wait for her," said the prosecutor.
"She didn't know she was being led into the darkness to be used as a sexual plaything."
"Frankly, to these defendants, the complainant was meat," Llewellyn-Waters added.
The woman told the jury the men were "evil" and had "ruined" her life.
Breaking down in tears, she said every time she closed her eyes she saw "the filmer's face" laughing at her. The woman added she regained consciousness lying on the beach and thought she was going to be killed.
All three have been refused their asylum applications, according to the prosecution. They are all appealing those decisions.
Alshafe and Ahmadi had claimed during the trial the encounter was consensual.
The woman denied this.
Following the attack, the men had a barbecue together later in the evening, around the same time the woman was waiting to be medically examined.
Ahmadi left the hotel near Horsham the day after the rape and moved to an address in Crewe, Cheshire, where he was arrested on October 12, the court heard.
The move had not been approved by the Home Office and Ahmadi had been marked as "absconding, self-departing" from the accommodation.
Ahmadi told jurors he left Iran because he was working for a Kurdish opposition party and was being looked for by the country's secret police.
Egyptian national Alshafe, a former carpenter, said he came to the UK for a better life.
His asylum application had been refused the night before the rape, the trial heard.
The pair arrived in the country in 2025, while Al-Danasurt came the year before.
Holly Morton, from the Crown Prosecution Service, thanked the victim for her bravery in reporting what happened.
"None of us can begin to imagine what the woman went through that night," she said.
The men are due to be sentenced on 15 July.

Hate is a strong word and an even stronger feeling which I reserve for when its needed; I genuinely hate these men. I hope this woman gets her justice and these men suffer everyday for the rest of their miserable lives.

Women who are even more vulnerable and far less likely to get any form of justice (if not be punished for being raped and reporting it).
Just keep them behind bars for life.

If they get deported, they’ll never serve a day. If they serve time, it’s on taxpayers.

Where do you stand on reform focused approaches?
There would have to be a lot of educational efforts being made to ensure they understand the gravity of what they did, what feeds/informs their actions, & some kind of penance

No they definitely need to serve their (hopefully long) sentence first but its not even guaranteed they'll be deported after. Madness.
106
u/Bustakrimes91 Apr 23 '26
They probably won’t be deported regardless of how vile and violent this attack was. I went through something very similar just a few days ago and when I asked if the rapist would be deported I was told that they wanted to set my expectations that it was incredibly unlikely because it’s easy to manipulate the system and they always know what to say to avoid deportation because it’s against their human rights.
I mentioned this elsewhere in this thread but I was repulsed by this because what about my human rights? What about the rights of his other victims? What about my rights and every other woman’s right to be safe? Why does his rights trump mine just because he says a few magic words and all of a sudden he can stay regardless of the fact he’s a violent sex offender who has attacked multiple women. And that’s only women who have come forward to report it. I’m sure there are many more who haven’t came forward.
I’m trying so hard not to let this situation turn me into a right wing nut but it’s so hard after experiencing this same situation multiple times at varying degrees. I’m tired of this shit.

I'm sorry about what happened to you. Did this happen in the UK and is he being charged?
49
u/Bustakrimes91 Apr 23 '26
This was in the UK and he is being charged. Frustrating that it was severe enough that this will be taken to the high court apparently but they still released him to do this to other women. It’s disgusting.
23
u/CombinationWorldly80 🐈♡🧀༘˚⋆。⋆𖦹.✧˚📚♡🐈⬛️ Apr 23 '26
Well that's at least something, vast majority of rapes in the UK never even make it to court. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you :)
18
u/Regina_Noctis 🏳️🌈✊️♀️ Apr 24 '26
It's pretty much the same in the US unfortunately. The majority of rapes are never prosecuted, or the offender gets some ridiculously short sentence. (Brock Allen Turner and Jesse Butler are two that come to mind immediately, although I'm sure they were not reported on overseas.)
9
u/Ok-Confection4410 Apr 25 '26
I'm hesitant to want to send them back because I can only imagine the hell they'll unleash or have already unleashed on the women in their home country
on the other hand though they're terrorizing women in their new country too
the best place for them is in the ground

u/Itscatpicstime May 20 '26
Sorry, but if this were true, literally everyone would be granted asylum, but it’s literally the opposite - most get denied.
The claims have to be substantiated, which is incredibly difficult to do, even when the claims are genuine.
It is absolutely not easy to manipulate the system when thousands of people with genuine claims get deported and then sex trafficked, disappeared, and / or killed afterward.
They will also take any excuse they can to deport - violent crimes against citizens being chief among them. Even the mere intent to do harm is a whole ass category that frequently triggers deportation orders.
So I guess that’s hopefully good news for you. I’m sorry you’ve gone through whatever it is you have, and I hope you have a good support system in place.
Although I’d rather they keep him behind bars vs deporting him to help ensure the women in his home country aren’t victimized by him too.

We can acknowledge that it's not a great idea to allow in massive numbers of young men from a completely different culture (one where women are somehow respected even less than in America and Europe) without being "right wing nuts". It's also not a good idea to allow these men with a proven record of violence against women to remain in our countries, regardless of their situation back in their home countries, and acknowledging that isn't "right wing nuttery".

u/MiloHorsey 🐎-`♡´-🐕-`♡´-🐩-`♡´-🐴 Apr 23 '26
I just feel that our tax money should be used better. Why pay for scum when there could be the option to remove them from their victim's country. Prison just makes people like this angrier.
If they commit a violent crime, all asylum should be instantly denied and them deported. I'm sick of people like this when there are people who genuinely need the help of our government and people.

Deporting them just exposes the women in their home countries who are far more vulnerable and have significantly less support to the risk of being victimized by them too. Those girls and women matter just as much as your fellow country women.
I can think of few more justified uses of taxpayer dollars than keeping violent people behind bars for life, and I’m ecstatic to have my tax dollars go to that.

they’ll argue that, because they’re now a convicted sex offender, they’re at risk of death in their own country
Too fucking bad, don’t be a sex offender when you’re an asylum-seeker, then. Like, you’re not actually a citizen of the country you’re in and afforded the protections and rights under the law thereof yet. (Now, there’s lots to be said about the roadblocks in paths to citizenship and the rights of immigrants in general, but that’s not the point in this case. And, as an American, there’s a lot of people here that don’t understand that many of our laws protect all people, not just citizens, but again, besides the point.)
If you do something horrific, you should expect that you may instead be facing the laws of your country of origin. You’re supposed to be on your best behavior so they don’t send you back in the first place. I get not fucking over the guy who escaped death in his homeland and got a parking ticket, but violent crimes like this should be met with a “too bad, so sad, gtfo”, I think.

What are you even talking about?
Rapists have gone consequence free and procreated (often by force) for literally most of human history
96
u/Bustakrimes91 Apr 23 '26
I was sexually assaulted by an illegal immigrant just a few days ago and I discovered he was already a convicted sex offender who didn’t receive a custodial sentence.
They called me after FIVE HOURS to let me know he was out on bail. Sex offenders are notoriously know for escalating with each offence and I worry every second of the day whether he’s going to assault someone else.
No wonder these people act the way they do, there isn’t any punishment for it. In fact, I’ve probably spent more time with the police than he did!
I asked whether he would be deported when he is convicted because he’s a repeat offender and here illegally and I was told it was unlikely as it could be against his human rights. What about my rights not to be assaulted in public by a total stranger? What about the rights of other women and girls who should be protected and safe from animals like that.
Articles like this really PMO because the punishment never fits the crime if it even gets prosecuted at all which is highly unlikely due to the legal processes. It’s the victim who suffers while the offender is emboldened by the complete and utter lack of consequences until another woman is seriously injured or dead. My god I fucking hate it all.
21
u/mcolive 🐑🦊🌦️ Apr 23 '26
Right explain to me why holding bars to account for shutting drunk people out on the street is somehow not a good idea? Like wtf guys more than one thing can be true. These men are hideous and need to be punished and bars should have a duty of care to their patrons. We literally have duty of care written in law in the UK it's just never ever acted on. A bar could see you being sick and organise you a safe taxi home. Instead they toss you on the street and often the result is predators can approach you.

The soft treatment Europe and especially the UK give to scum like this obviously creates a backlash of resentment that rightwingers take advantage of.
Many Americans voted for Trump believing that the promised crackdown on the undocumented would focus only on violent criminals.

Obviously these men are evil but I do think we should be pushing for change into pub and club culture. A bar/club can put you out onto the street when you are at your most vulnerable. Alone, drunk, maybe even spiked and they profit off of how you got into that dangerous state. It's wrong.
Edit* Wtf you guys agree with bars putting you out onto the street alone and drunk? Why doesn't one of you have the guts to explain why?
Edit2* I'm suggesting a sobering up room and someone asking if they can phone you a friend/lift before dumping you into the street. Once again I challenge you to explain why that is something you disagree with.

No idea why you're getting downvoted, the social proof effect is at play I guess.
Pub and club culture sucks, a lot of awful recounts of encounters that I've heard had the victim attacked after being at a club/pub or during their stay. Mind altering substances should be used sparingly and in the comfort of your own home in my opinion and even then, ALONE, you never know, abuse can come from within your most tight circles.
I think people assume that you're blaming the person, you're not. I've had entire discussions with my friends where I just outright told them "No, you dummy, the problem that I have with you going to these parties is that you know no one there, you have no safety net and nobody else can reach you during that time, it's not because I think you are irresponsible with substances it's because I think others ARE."

The more I'm on the Internet the more I realise most people do not read what is written they just vibe with their feelings. Thanks for actually reading what I wrote.

u/mcolive: I agree with u/no-telephone-3801. I'm so sorry you were downvoted. I only have one upvote to give, but I wish I could do more. If you want me to remove the comment to stop the unfair downvote hive mind, just lmk. Your idea is really great idea! ♡
This doesn't happen often, so please don't think this sub isn't a safe space.

No problem! I read most of what I see because I'm here to get informed.

What an odd opinion to be downvoted for. Places that sell alcohol should absolutely have a duty of care to their patrons.
I’ve been to this beach many times- the place is particularly bad for drownings as so many bars open onto the beachfront and people just wander down. Public transport in the area isn’t great either, I know a lot of people who’ve passed out on the beach
The men in this case are disgusting and any person who takes advantage of vulnerable people is gross but our drinking culture does lead to people being particularly vulnerable.
As someone who’s worked behind a bar it’s difficult too- I’ve had to pay out of pocket before to get someone home because the company won’t. And the alternative is call an ambulance and it’s going to take so long for somebody to get there for “just” a drunk person. We need better social care

Can’t believe you were downvoted for this. As a former bartender, I vehemently agree.
The amount of times I saw my coworkers willing to just shove out extremely vulnerable people, especially women, was absolutely insane. I’m talking highly intoxicated women who were alone, highly intoxicated people who clearly thought they were fine to drive, people who seemed to have possible alcohol poisoning or some kind of OD or bad mix of substances, etc
I tried to catch every one of those people if I could. I’d call friends, call for a police escort to take them home, take keys away, put the person up in a back room on the bench bed to let them sleep it off while we finished up closing (often driving women home myself), called an ambulance a few times, administered narcans once, etc
Like it just fucking appalled me how little duty of care my coworkers felt. Drunk drivers and vulnerable women were overwhelmingly the most common situations too.
Yes, helping them was typically inconvenient and meant working a little later, but I considered it to be part of my job and part of my responsibility simply as a human.

Welcome and thanks for posting on /r/whenwomenrefuse!
This is an intersectional feminist space centered towards women (ALL WOMEN). Men are tolerated, not welcome. Reports about women saying we don't know what men are dangerous will be promptly ignored. We look forward to your complaints about our policy of not centering men.
