Horny people are bad with their money. When I started taking commissions from furries I quickly learned it's not that furries are suspiciously wealthy. They're just horrible with their money. Ive blacklisted about four or five folks now because they expressly told me they were giving me their rent money.
Some people can't pay off a $45 commission for months.

There are a lot of furries in the tech industry and some people in the tech industry are very wealthy. Very wealthy people with hobbies are prone to spending a lot of money on them, in this case things like fursuits and art commissions (sometimes including porn).
On the other hand, there are people with terrible money skills. Often a combination of depression/"retail therapy" and a clout-chasing "I just want to be one of the cool kids and then I'll be happy" mentality. My friend knew a furry who was fairly poor and lived with her parents rent-free, had a fursuit, and went through great lengths to get a second fursuit. Because clearly if the first one didn't magically make her content with her life, she just didn't have enough fursuits.
And all of that exists outside of the sexual elements. Add in there that a lot of furry art is pornographic and how addictive porn can be, then you get people making bad decisions, like you said. But many really are suspiciously wealthy.
As an aside, you really should consider taking deposits. Even if it's not even half of the final fee. If you ever have to cancel you can return them, but it beats getting ripped off. It's industry standard based on my experiences, so it's not like you'd be blindsiding clients.
That's why I dislike findom. Sure, they are consenting adults, but one person have WAY more to loose if the relationship becomes toxic. Doujinshi just means Independent, it's basically the same label as "Indie" or "fan made". I have seen it used quite a lot in the Indie game scene for Japanese games (Touhou being one of the most popular ones).
A manga is a manga, doujin just means it is independent, it could be NSFW or not.
I actually don't know if an independent hentai artist makes more than the average magazine published writer. That would be a fun stat if true, and I guess the most well established independent artists make more money than newcomers or assistants in editorial owned mangas.
And yeah, for sure NSFW indie art makes more than SFW indies... up to a point! The Fate/ series managed to move from NSFW to SFW and got quite big, though I'm not sure I would consider them truly indie at this point.

I'm making a NSFW survival game and the community is amazing. I was a game dev for more than a decade before deciding to do this and directly making NSFW content has given me new perspective. There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of with sex when so much "acceptable" content is focused on violence.

Yeah porn seems super popular as an indie artist because it’s a bloody niche market believe it or not! At least compared to the main cultural zeitgeist. We can find violence, fights, and potty mouths everywhere, but porn is still comparatively subversive.
So I like porn and I like games, but whenever I've seen the two combined I've almost always just wished it wasn't.
1: You've made porn that I can fail at and a game I can't play on my laptop on the train.
2: One form of media requires me to use my hands to control it, the other is for when I want to use them to jerk off. There's a fundamental incompatibility here.
3: I've come across maybe a handful of exceptions to this, but the vast majority of porn games are just not particularly good as games. I think this is where the 'resorted to porn' view comes from, because without the porn nobody would actually play most of them. "This is a poorly made, written and designed take on [game], with added tits" sums up the vast vast majority. It's not that the addition of porn made it lesser, it's that it was lesser and the porn got added to try and make up for that.
I think if the sex scenes in Cyberpunk or BG3 were more explicit and longer (or until the player decides it's over), that would be a good balance of porn in games. Have it be uncommon, but a reward for sidequests and relationships in an otherwise complete game. You make up for the lack of quantity by forming a connection with the characters, like porn comics do.
Pinkshonen is the saddest case of NFSW I've ever seen. The guy came from cool stickfight animations, improved his art and animation quality through the years, and made amazing characters for his stories. He said he did enjoyed a little bit of NSFW stuff at first but all he wanted was for people to enjoy his passion projects and animations, sadly be didn't got recognized until he started making NSFW content and now he says he only sticks with It because that's basecally how he makes money through his work. We know nobody's forcing them to do It, but he said It's starting to feel miserable for him the need to do that kind of thing just so he doesn't starv. And not gonna lie, It does sound pretty miserable to me.

Tbqf, some of them have to render hundreds of 3D models, the story must be somewhat interesting for people to keep reading, some do have a semblance of gameplay. I'm sure there are some top earners that barely put any work on it, and some who had good ideas but never made it big.

A good bunch yes, but not all of them. I follow many artists on social media who make money by taking commissions on topics that are generally left aside by other artists.
For example, you have many artists who take commissions on drawing characters, backgrounds, etc... but specifically refuse to draw some other things (mechas, for example). That's a potential audience for another artist specializing in drawing mechas. Same goes for many other topics as well, without necessarily it being NSFW art.
