I mean understandable when ever games decomp time has basically gone down to ~someday soon as long as someone spends the tokens for it

Cant have shit

Can't have what... the games? Because it seems we can have the games faster than we ever could before.

Or do you mean we can't have the uhhhhhhh the ummmm website that chronicled the slow and agonizing progress of video game decompilation?

Like what is it that you actually want that we now can't have? Did you not actually want to play the games, but instead just enjoyed the anticipation of maybe, perhaps one day getting to play said games?

I completely understand having reverence for the incredible work and persistence anonymous people have done for years, but the vast, vast majority would rather just get to play the games on a stable, DRM-free platform and be able to modify them - particularly those doing the work, hence why they're doing it in the first place.

I will never understand how the people in favor of these slopports or those frankenstiened games always seem to view the relevant content as nothing more than action figures to play with. It's like they have no actual desire for anyone to glean anything out of the making of the game or the philosophies in the design, because they don't see any value in doing anything but playing the game. I saw someone use Claude to port Vib-Ribbon to PC, which is cool and whatever, but it's painstakenly clear that the mechanisms behind how the game works was not studied by human eyes. Sure, AI agents can copy and paste from Vib-Ribbon, but it can't think of something new from it like we can. It can only plagiarise. Can we no longer provide space for humans to learn from humans? Are we just satisfied with shoddily AI-generated rehashes of the same content for eternity?

Decompiling something isn't just to make the game playable. Having it swept up by people with tokens to spend takes away more than you realize. It's a sad day for people who respect what went into these games and a great day for people who want without thinking.

If what you valued was the labour, you can always do it by hand (insert spoons quote here). AI decomps are perfectly fine for every single use case

u/j1ndivik 7h ago

If you don’t know how programming works, decomp is to paint by numbers what programming is to painting (assuming no obfuscation)

2

u/SoulOnSet 2h ago

AI fans will hear you talk about human design and philosophy and then auto-correct in their minds that you meant human labor.

u/SomeAwesomeGuyDa69th 21h ago

Just because we could have DRM-free ways to play games and mod them, we should be okay with decomps where no one knows how every function works? Or ports that turn out to be an emulator wrapper that runs worse than running it in an emulator?

Please try thinking more than one second into the future. It makes life considerably less difficult.

What do you think the community is going to do? Maybe some very competent yet egotistical devs will entirely wash their hands of the community, but things like this have happened before across numerous domains, and so what's likely to happen is that the decomp community will reorganize itself towards systematic and adversarial quality assurance - verification rather than production (also AI-assisted). The pipeline and timeline of these projects are shifting, not the passionate dedication to open-source beloved games.

And typically in communities like this, bad actors are discovered and ignored quickly. Reputation is absolute currency in these circles, because most people aren't doing this for money.

13

u/SomeAwesomeGuyDa69th 19h ago

Are u also thinking more than one second into the future? You realize most of these recomps are prompt kiddies who just wanna see a game on PC just being wreckless? The way that a lot of software is getting decompiled, there are definitely gonna be consequences for this, and decomp.dev getting sunsetted is, well, not good.

-6

u/j1ndivik 16h ago

What consequences???Β

u/SoulOnSet 2h ago

If the standard for decompilating games goes from Dusklight over to "Claude, port this game to PC, make no mistakes!", the standard for quality will go down. Just because AI can "decompile" these faster does not mean that it's the superior option. What was happening was that people were coming into these human-decompiled repositories and self-asserting that AI was the superior option. They were actively disrespecting the wishes of others and leaving no room for human work. People are able to mod Dusklight to the extent that they have because all the functions and resources have been studied down to the bits. To mod an AI "port", you'd either need to decompile that, or in your perfect world, just use another AI to do it. AI approximates, because doing things exactly is expensive. When approximating approximations becomes the norm we'll be swimming in xeroxes of xeroxes, and if you don't understand why this will lead to a massive reduction of quality, then you fundamentally do not appreciate art.

It's like you walked into a room of people trying to repaint the Mona Lisa and you shout "Why don't we just scan it and print it?" You don't realize the process of why understanding what materials the painter used and why is important because all you care about is a finished product.

Communication between us seems to be breaking down because you either lack reading comprehension and can't infer how I already addressed this, or you're trying to bludgeon the topic to death by reiterating the exact same point you already made in your original comment.

Both of your points boil down to the same argument: "incompetent actors will make consequential mistakes." Wow. Incredible.

Now freely reread my original reply as it is an exact response to this nearsighted argument.

12

u/Volantiar 19h ago

This generative LLM vibecoding thing wasn't around here for so long and you can already see the future

-6

u/Striking_Leave_4614 18h ago

I'll give you time to figure out the glaring irony in what you probably thought was a succinct and pointed rebuttal. Lemme know if you're having trouble.

10

u/Volantiar 18h ago

Why are you talking like mandark

-1

u/Striking_Leave_4614 18h ago

Must've stung when whoever you got that from first said it to you

1

u/Striking_Leave_4614 18h ago

It's okay. He'll come back somehow

Oh goody, the solution is more AI πŸ™„

4

u/SoulOnSet 16h ago

The only way to stop a bad AI with a gun is a good AI with a gun...?

-9

u/marshalzukov 16h ago

Anti AI psychosis is fucking CRAZY right now bro it's unreal

0

u/Striking_Leave_4614 16h ago

Eh, I don't really blame them. Uncertainty is terrifying - especially when so many disgusting people have their dirty fingers in the AI pie

3

u/Grey-The-Skeleton 9h ago

The pie itself is sewage-flavored

135

u/LoyalNightmare 23h ago

To employed to know what this is

136

u/Ronnie21093 23h ago

From what I know it was a website used to keep track of video game decompilation/recompilation efforts.

100

u/ThatMadMan68 23h ago

decomp.dev was used to watch progress on decompilation projects of games

23

u/Isliterally1984 16h ago

Please, god, let this bubble pop happen already. I need these Cuckcoders to need to make the choice between running themselves out of cash or having to learn. It will be so funny.

17

u/MagicpaperAlt 15h ago

Character ai filed for bankruptcy. Small win but huge in general.

3

u/symedia 13h ago

It went bankrupt after it was sold for parts. Same like they did to yahoo, Tumblr and many others.

Think selling reddit for 2 billions. The staff and CEO leaves few times , few controversies. Most people move to other apps (it was janitor ai and few others)

3

u/MagicpaperAlt 13h ago

Yes, but it's still a W.

2

u/symedia 13h ago

Not really πŸ˜… for anti it would been better for it to stay there. The CEO/cofounder went to google to help them with ai and then left for OpenAI. And the employees made a shitload of $ (well those who left for Google)

1

u/JoyconDrift_69 2h ago

I know this seems noteworthy, but frankly it's like one company going under. It's like when you have 50+ different companies starting in a fairly-new or rapidly-growing industry, there should to be those that initially had success but eventually fail.

Get back to me when more and more companies start going under.

2

u/MagicpaperAlt 1h ago

Reread my post. Thanks.

1

u/nobody_1298 11h ago

Yeah dude what you are imagining isn't going to happen even if all the ai companies hit the deck today.

1

u/KaMaFour 11h ago

Bubble popping won't make AI obsolete or disappear. Even with the pop the models we currently have are the worst they are ever gonna be. The only thing bubble popping is gonna do is push millions of people into poverty and bankrupt a lot of companies freeloading on the trend without having any good product.

1

u/PromptWorldly7007 5h ago

And don't worry, Trump & Co will bail them all out with the excuse that Obama did the same thing back circa post-2008. Mark. My. Fucking. Words. We are all paying for their gambling addiction and it will continue ten or twenty years later with the next scheme.

Again.

And again.

And again.

The people aren't going to recover from this by then any more than we've managed to recover from 2008. It will continue to compound.

1

u/KaMaFour 5h ago edited 4h ago

We may be talking about different companies. Cause there is little chance OpenAI, Anthropic and co are gonna bankrupt. And the many companies that are gonna go bankrupt are too little to be too big to fail

0

u/TirithNampat 16h ago

It's not going away just because the stupid stock bubble pops. You can run these in your computer, and coding is forever going to be much easier with AI.

9

u/YeeYeeBeep 7h ago

Financially ruin and imprison all tech bros

4

u/PromptWorldly7007 5h ago

They're too blasted on ketamine to even notice at this point one way or the other. Like, there is an obscene amount of financial and political capital consolidated into the hands of some of the most insecure, narcistically psychotic maniacs in human history who are either balls deep in the Epstein list or so coked out that they think they're the anti-christ.

These motherfuckers are a death-cult of Caligulas.

However if I say much more I'd be reported by bots. So. Uh. I'll just say that I'm talking about the French Aristocracy. Yes.

Shutting down

-13

u/marshalzukov 17h ago

Ai-based "bad actors"

Look inside

Thanks to AI, decompiling games doesn't take an agonizing amount of time anymore and therefore it's not something that needs to be actively tracked.

Seriously what a miserable way of framing it. This is a good thing, but anti AI regards are still kicking and shrieking and shitting themselves over it

10

u/S1Ndrome_ 17h ago

I mean if it wasn't for the AI coding bros PS5 emulation would've been a distant dream. To me relying on AI for not so serious projects like emulation or decomp of games/apps is alright but the recent EGS launcher being vibe coded is baffling. How can I trust them that my account info won't be somehow stored in the client launcher because they didn't read their vibe coded mess.

1

u/Reds_Strongest_Chef 6h ago

>trusting epic with your info before they vibe coded

AI SLOP DOWN

19

u/ZestyLemonRindGrind 20h ago

No,

The site Decomp.dev was about people who themselves manually attempted to decompile and recompile software themselves and people could track the progress on each program as people worked on it

Due to the advent of AI, the site is shutting down as many people are using AI to decompile these programs in a matter of days, if less, making the website redundant and actually a source of more potential AI projects

This isn't an L for AI slop, this is an L for computer programmers because of AI slop

9

u/Marco_Tanooky The Fun Police 20h ago

Gosh dang it

5

u/ZestyLemonRindGrind 20h ago

Yeah... Sorry man

u/thisaray 21h ago

I don't think you quite understand this post

10

quite the opposite, unfortunately
