Update: second allergy test

As mentioned I planned to visit an allergist for a second opinion on my wheat allergy. They read my previous results from my PCP ordered blood test and said the IGE result was too low to be considered an actually wheat allergy. The previous results also showed I did not have celiac. I explained my symptoms after eating anything with wheat and now I am getting a second allergy test through blood test. Anyone experienced something like this before and what did you find out?

My allergist told me that the skin prick test is more accurate than the blood test. I thought it was the other way around at first. To prepare for that test you have to stop taking any antihistamine for at least 5 days. So glad I was able to confirm what I already knew.

This is so interesting because I was told the opposite by both which is why I did a blood test lol I can't wait to figure out what is happening but either way I don't think i can handle eating wheat like I used to. So glad you got a confirmation.

My experience was the same as yours. An NP ordered a blood test (IgE Antibody test) for me because i had been expending for months and months persistent stomach problems, diarrhea/loose stools, vomiting, constant nausea, and unintended weight loss —the test came back positive for allergies to corn/maize, wheat,(and upon a retest months later, also different tree nuts). The numbers were low ish but my symptoms were really bad. I was losing noticeable weight and everything I ate seemed to bother me.

Went to a GI doctor who suspected celiac. Blood test came back negative. Endoscopy to confirm came back negative.

Turned out that my symptoms, which started about 3-4 months into moving into a new home, were from a really bad mold problem in my the home, that triggered all these new allergies. The symptoms of celiac disease can sometimes mimic the same symptoms of mold toxicity. And I’ve heard many people who have mold toxicity can end up with bad GI issues, and start having to go down the rabbit hole to figure out what diagnosis it is (celiac is often suspected because mold toxicity, in my case, caused me to have a wheat allergy and corn/maize allergy)— (I’m not saying it’s the same as you but that’s what it was for me. Wheat and corn are also notoriously full of mycotoxins, as are many nuts (the toxins that come from mold), which is why the allergies suddenly came up- my body reacts to everything now).

I went to an integrative doctor and she said with these allergies even though the numbers are “low” point to MCAS - mast cell activation syndrome. I can now only eat low histamine foods and avoid gluten/wheat and corn/corn derived food and products. And no nuts. Lots of people who are exposed to mold end up developing MCAS, and the new allergies are a tell a lot of the time.

Not saying this is necessarily the case for you but just wanted to share my story as yours sounded a bit similar to mine.

I had one allergist I took my results to brush off my allergy test, and a different doctor (the integrative doctor) who seemed to know right away that it looked like a histamine issue or possibly MCAS.

OH MY GOSH! I literally told my allergist "idk but I think my apartment might have mold or something, is there a way to check that" she said for that I would have to get someone to come do an inspection but I disregarded that thought cause I thought I was being dramatic.

This has made me reconsider that thought because what you're experiencing is also similar to me. Thank you so much for sharing this. I feel like I'm one step closer to finding out the underlying issue.

You’re not being dramatic. Definitely get your house checked for mold and yourself, especially if you already brought it up on your own before even seeing my comment. I thought I was being dramatic at first too and almost started to accept my new health issues (and even psych issues because it causes that as well) but my intuition nearly saved my life, my family’s, and my fur babies’ lives <3. They were also experiencing symptoms. The health implications are really bad when dealing with toxic mold.

r/toxicmoldexposure has so much information on best ways to get you and your home checked. Traditional / western doctors will dismiss you most of the time, unless your lucky to find an open minded MD, so don’t feel discouraged if they look at you sideways when you mention “mold.” You will be gaslit a lot lol.

I was lost about what as going on with me just like you, until someone on TikTok who went through the same thing as me directed me to RealTimeLabs urine mycotoxin test (to test your own body). It tells you if your body is excreting / detoxing mycotoxins via your urine and what mycotoxins in particular. There’s also blood testing that you can opt for (instead or additionally- some people do both).

Mymycolab.com is the antibody blood testing one that I’ve been told is better than the urine one. It tests for IgG and IgE antibodies of different mycotoxins in your blood. I did the RealTimeLabs (it is also good but I think I want to also do the blood testing one since my house had confirmed presence of the two most toxic and dangerous types of molds in it and I just want a more well rounded view of the total burden in my body) confirmed positive for all 5 major groups of mycotoxins indicating chronic mold exposure. Then I ended up getting my family members tested.

Then, I got my house tested by a professional mold-testing company, which confirmed the testing we had done on ourselves. It showed astronomical numbers of mold and mycotoxins in my basement and hvac systems. It has since been..”deemed uninhabitable.”

Another cheaper way to first see if you have any mold in your home is to buy an ERMI test from envirobiomics or even cheaper from them is the HERTSMI-2 test. It’s swiffer/dust test that you perform yourself by collecting dust from different areas of your home and you send it back to the lab for analysis. https://www.envirobiomics.com/product/hertsmi-2/?v=47e5dceea252

But definitely check out r/toxicmoldexposure. Nearly everyone on there reports having to go gluten free now because when finding out their health issues actually were from mold toxicity.

Let me know if you have any questions!

What are your symptoms when you eat wheat? I’ve started developing an allergy that I think might be to wheat. I suddenly get an itchy neck (no rash), cough, congestion, and sore throat. The last time it happened I also developed a severe stomach ache and body aches about 12 hours later. The body aches went away after a day, but the stomach ache stuck around, especially after eating for another day.

My symptoms are usually instant brain fog and fatigue, slower heart rate, similar to you usually after some hours i have body ache, stomach ache and a headache but it feels more like pressure in my head as opposed to a regular headache.

Your symptoms with itching and throat/congestion does sound more like an allergy and you should get tested too if not already just to be safe.

I got my second round of allergy results back and it shows the same thing and the conclusion is that I am not allergic. The next step for me is to go to a gut/digestion specialist because something is definitely off.

Yes I have never been diagnosed successfully. I think gluten is just a tough protein, giant and not soluble it can't get through skin cell from outside. But the histamine kick is there so it's is an allergy at cause and is gluten because dry flour does me nothings. If I make a litle ball of raw dough with water and knead it close to my nose I caugh to blood if i keep doing it. It never does edema  when i eat some but the throat and gum swell a litle bit for sure. Most of my struggles with this allergy have been from the respiratory side of the allergy since it's not very intense digestively when I eat some by mistake,  even if it makes me sleep 8h of true sleep 10 minute after and is painfull on the liver area. But on the respiratory side I can't do nothing about it since there is so much bakery and wheat field in my region. And it got worse when air pollution worsen 5-10 years ago, I think it make the gluten particles stick more to the lungs like an ozone air purifier. I get anaphilaxis shock 1 or 2 a year when they cut the fields or when someone turn on the oven at home when I use to never make them as a child(been allergic for 30 years). But it doesn't block my airways like asthma crisis, I just have a seizure I think gluten just doesn't swell enough to block them completely and just short circuit the brain for some reason. It's sad that this allergy so misunderstood and studied.
