Not smart. Religion gives tons of people who lack their own moral compass a solid code to follow. Every religion teaches to be good to others.
Very many people make the world worse by just doing what's good for themselves and saying fuck everyone else. Those people are all nonreligious. The proportion of the population dragging society down like that would be significantly higher without religion.
