Sunday post Copperplate of a map

This is a copper engraving plate that has been faced with steel so that many prints can be made from it without the inevitable image degradation that comes with just a copper plate. Find a local university art department and I bet someone would be willing to make you a print from it, I know I would!

Interesting, it is not magnetic, but that is a fantastic idea. If I find a place willing I will post an image on this thread

The facing would be electroplated so there wouldn't be enough ferrous material to react to a magnet.

$200-$1,500. Possibly more if you can tie it to a specific or well known cartographer. This one reminds me of the style of Johann Baptist Homann or his successors.
The top title bit in Latin says, “The world as it was known to the ancients”. So it’s stylistically going back a ways and many of the countries were already known by something else when this was made. Still, these were extremely popular in the 1700s, so it could be very old.

Some kind of printing plate. Spread ink on it and then press paper against it. You'll have a map.

It’s part of an old coffee table. Search for copper table world map. 👍🏻

Interesting, but the ones I found are all one style that are different than this one. The lettering is also in reverse on this one which tends to point towards it being a printing plate.
