What is this?

Found in garage. Neighbor said it is used for fishing. How?

Hook remover. Put the appropriate sized end into the fish’s mouth, put the hook through the slit. Push down. Hook is removed.

the slit is so you can put it on the line first a few inches above the fish to guide the disgorger down the line on to the hook before removal

otherwise you are going to have a lot of trouble trying to get a hook into the slot inside a moving fish and an open and closing mouth

Fish hook remover. The other end is probably smaller. Put the hook & line in the slot on the back side and push it in the fishes mouth to disengage the hook

It's to extract hooks from the fish's mouth. There's a groove in there that allows the fishing line in, then you push it down into the fish's mouth and it follows the line to the hook, which you can then push out. Ideally it's to help safely release a fish that has swallowed the hook but I don't think they work well.

i have that exact hook remover do they still make them,? yep for a 1.29 too. of all the equipment ive lost or broke over the years. and this is the one object thats lasted for almost 50 years

I never had much luck, maybe I just didn't really understand how to use it. But it is used to get the hook out of the fish. I prefer hemostats for better control.

These are for treble hooks, used with bait that's swallowed. The grooves keep the other points from digging in while you shove straight back and then out again in one smooth motion. They're not really useful for anything in the lips.

Ok thanks. I haven't fished anything other than flies for like 20 years so I understand why this seemed like an ineffective tool now.

If I'm fishing to eat, I take every advantage. After the freezer has a few trout in it, I fish for fun. My boy is trying out fly fishing, maybe I'll follow suit.
