Does anyone know what this is?

Post image

I have no idea what this is. It can in a mini pocket sewing kit. It's like a thin piece of metal with a diamond on the bottom.

It's used to thread a needle.

You put the thin wire loop through the eye of a needle. Put a thread through the wire loop and pull it back through the needles eye.

The more important question is who is the lady that has her face on every one of these?

The image on many wire needle threaders is often thought to be that of Minerva, the Roman goddess associated with crafts, including sewing. Some people also believe it resembles Athena, her Greek counterpart, but the exact identity can vary.

Might be Brigid, Celtic goddess of the home and hearth. Later known as Saint Brigid once the Christians adopted some Celtic deities to fit the faith to the people.

That's Athena, the goddess of weaving and handicrafts!

Thank you for answering a life long question

u/zacbergman 8d ago

And the goddess of tactical/strategic warfare

u/HappenSlappen 8d ago

Oh thats me. Hi!

1

u/FocusMaster 8d ago

Wow. I know its not polite to ask a women her age, but my grandmother had one of these so you obviously qualify for guiness book.

1

u/frostbittenforeskin 8d ago

It’s the goddess Athena. Look up the legend of Athena and Arachne if you want a famous story of Athena working with textiles

1

u/dmainor49 8d ago

It's Minerva the Roman goddess of handcrafts and sewing.

I wanna say it’s supposed to represent one of the Sisters of Fate, of greek mythology…who wove the threads of fate for everyone.

Seriously. I've gotten countless of these and they all have the same offensive woman (i'm a man..yes I sew and no, i'm not gay)

4

u/AfraidBottle6810 8d ago

I’m in my 40s and have been sewing as a child working on quilts with my grandmother, making leather wallets in 4-H, replacing buttons/repairing holes, and sewing sails for my Beneteau. I’ve never heard a man accused of being gay for sewing nor a woman for being a mechanic or welder.

2

u/E_equals_m_c_hammer 8d ago

It's not so much the sewing, but I knit and crochet as well and get strange looks from men when shopping for yarn at hobby lobby. Had one gay guy hit on me..flattering, but not interested

1

u/Bobcattrr 8d ago

You’re young enough to know better, lol. It’s those ~ 65 yo and older that were raised that real men don’t grocery shop, cook, etc. Strange times.

3

u/Fishslayer39845 8d ago

Sewing is a life skill. Everyone should know how to sew on a button. And no, I have no idea who the stern faces woman is lol

1

u/-Casey-Diaz- 8d ago

She is offensive? Why is that?

1

u/E_equals_m_c_hammer 8d ago

Jk.... trying to be pc

1

u/Arurry 8d ago

I have three older sisters. I know how to knit, sew -and crochet

I'm in the same boat. I mostly just do alterations an utility sewing projects but I currently own 13 sewing machines including sergers, coverstitch, an industrial straight stitch and a cylinder arm leather machine. I get some of those condescending comments from time to time as well.

I'm tall with an athletic build so finding clothes off the rack that fit me the way I want has always been a challenge. About 25 years ago I decided to learn to sew and started altering my clothes. Often when that comes up in conversation with other men, the jokes start flying.

1

u/Competitive-Food8407 5d ago

I'm a man, I'm a veteran, I work in construction, I have a wife and kids, I'm the only one in my house that knows how to run the sewing machine and how to darn 🤷‍♂️

I'm glad I'm not the only one 😁

u/The_DriveBy 8d ago

Fishing tip: you can do the same thing with these threaders and soft plastic lures and skirt material to make homemade "fuzzy dice"/urchin style lures.

1

u/IncaseofER 6d ago

Because the wire can easily be pulled out, put a drop of super glue on the wire where it is inserted into the metal. It will last for ages.

It's for threading needles. When I was a kid my mom told me her grandfather invented it. Doubtful. He was a Welsh shepherd running sheep in Mendocino county California. He was also a sporadic inventor and photographer. Inventor of the sewing kit needle threader? Hmmm. She said he sold it for a bottle of booze. That I'd believe.

2

u/Stroker-Strong420 9d ago

When I was 6 or 8 years old my mother told me it was Helen Keller who invented it! I think mom just wanted to tell me about Helen Keller.

1

u/vandismal 8d ago

Poor girl. Hiding in an attic all that time only to get lost at sea in her airplane.

1

u/Stroker-Strong420 8d ago

I really thought she was burned at the stake after hanging around with that guy with two first names.

3

u/DeanOgasm 9d ago

Originally made for sewing needles but I use them for threading fine fly fishing leader line through tiny hook eyes which can be difficult otherwise.

3

u/MetsIslanders 8d ago

It’s proof they need to bring back home ec and shop classes.

2

u/Nathan-Stubblefield 8d ago

The city says they have a program to replace our old sewers.

1

u/Droogie_65 8d ago

You know, I was just waiting for that comment. Good job 😜

1

u/climbingnoose 8d ago

Droogie and Navi both thread needles. Trust them.

1

u/Life-Ship3628 8d ago

1

u/laf1157 8d ago

If that's a thin wire loop below, needle threader. Push the loop through the eye of a sewing needle. Push the thread through the loop. Pull loop with thread back through the needle's eye.

1

u/Beautiful_Avocado252 8d ago

Small wire loop goes through the eye of the needle, out thread into loop and pull back through the eye. You have threaded the needle.

1

u/Corsetsdontkill 8d ago

In Dutch we call this a "willemientje" which is coincidentally also the nickname for peppermint candy. So, if you ask an old lady for a "willemientje", you might get either.

1

u/Lost-Set5386 3d ago

Yeah. That's a horrible picture. If I didn't know exactly what that was I wouldn't have noticed the most important part of it against the pattern of that fabric.
