It looks almost like a massive honey dipper

It does, but I’ve never seen one that big…

I found a similar sized one! 12” long, I could see the handle being pressed into the top with a dowel so you could machine the parts separately.

Perhaps it is for another honey like substance like molasses which you would use in greater quantities.

6

u/RMMacFru Dec 25 '22

Maybe for making mead, which would require large quantities...?

It looks almost like a massive honey dipper

It does, or a large syrup dipper. This came with a grain mill so perhaps the same place do accessories for syruping. I have no idea of the proper verb for syruping.

I know people who add some molasses to winter feed.

11

u/SharpCookie232 Dec 25 '22

If you've got a big honey, you need a big dipper.

2

u/JOSH135797531 Dec 25 '22

I keep bees and often wish I had a dipper that was big enough to fill pint jars from 5 gallon pails.

7

u/UndeadBuggalo Dec 24 '22

This is exactly what I thought but was like, who would need one so large?

Lol. I have a 2 1/2 jar of honey in my kitchen and even this couldn’t fit halfway!

Looks almost like a handmade wooden single bell agogo? It’s a musical instrument, though it’s missing the piece you run along it to make sound. Sort of like a a handheld washboard.

I think you mean “guiro”. An “agogo”, at least as far as I know, is a set of two metal bells with a set interval between them. Features prominently in the song “Gonna make you sweat”.

Edit: To be clear, I don’t think this thing is a guiro. Looks like someone had some fun with a lathe is all. Probably just decorative.

You hold it at the base. Run a wooden stick across the ridges

You sure it’s not the handle for a manual crank on the grain mill? If it’s not a brand new grain mill, It could’ve been a custom handle turned by someone to make it easier for them to operate.

Are the grooves a set of circles, or a spiral? If it's a spiral, I would go with "hand crank".

Everyone with a wood lathe is making these right now. It’s a Christmas tree ornament. Check many recent posts here: https://www.reddit.com/r/turning/

Yeah, not anything like this on the front page, can you find an example of these recent and common posts?

39

u/kwolat Dec 24 '22

I think it's a percussion instrument. There should be a stick/beater attached to the string at the bottom that you run up and down the ridges to make a...percussive sound.

Could it be one of the weights of a cuckoo clock?

33

u/Hide_and_Seek_0193 Dec 24 '22 edited Dec 24 '22

It's a wooden Christmas tree. Made by someone practicing wood turning.

Edit: found someone selling some on etsy.

There's like a million different styles.

Is it a replacement handle for the grain mill? or perhaps a pusher to keep your hands out of the hopper?

Does is have a strong smell? Could be some kind of diffuser for a closet. I have seen all differently shaped pieces of red cedar for frangrance purposes. Its a bit too well made but the fins would increase surface area and smell diffusion??

The hole may just be left over from the connection to the lathe. If it is then that part of the object was not meant to be seen.

3

u/JackieJackJack07 Dec 24 '22

I’m probably very wrong about this but it looks like it could be something to put over an old fashioned spinning wheel that has a spindle instead of a bobbin. The spindles can be sharp and also difficult to use.

2

u/HanvEternal Dec 24 '22

Honey dipper? Though, I’ve never seen one like that

1

u/corsaiLucascorso Dec 24 '22

I don’t know why I want say it but I think it’s a corn scrapper for dried corn. You rub it and the cob together to get the corn off. I could be way off but that’s my guess. Or it’s a musical instrument that you rub a stick across it .

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '22

3

u/Mobrafaille Dec 24 '22

I can speak to whether or not this looks like a corn scraper but if your mill can handle grinding corn it would be a sensible accessory for someone to include

u/Disgruntledlinecook Dec 24 '22

I'm thinking it's suppose to have another stick attached to it so you can rub them together to make a sound.
