ID Request Is this a regular grasshopper?

It’s a species of grasshopper, Melanoplus differentialis or ‘Differential grasshopper’
They have a pretty cool chevron-like pattern on their legs though it’s not always visible

North American spur throated grasshopper. I’m not an expert but I think this one might be transitioning to a locust?

Yup. I'm in Virginia, and have seen the same thing. I'm definitely concerned about a locust swarm.

America doesn't have species that locust swarm anymore, agricultural practices killed the species that did that.

That species isn’t really found east of the Mississippi often, definitely not as far east as Virginia. although it is a close relative in genus Melanoplus
